TIFU because I had never seen The Terminator, and decided to watch them all. I had actually seen Terminator 2 and 4 when I was younger, but I just remembered bits and pieces. So I watch Terminator 1 and Terminator 2 and I enjoyed them. When I got to Terminator 3, I found it odd how it was about John Connor and he was a young man, and I especially was confused when it said that Sarah Connor died from cancer. I thought it was some weird timeline split thing that they decided to not explain. It was even weirder when I got to Dark Fate, and the beginning was supposed to be taking place right after the main events of Terminator 2, and John Connor was killed. The whole time I was just thinking “are all of these movies just deciding to ignore the ending of Terminator 2? Am I missing something? Is this a different timeline that wasn’t explained?” Well, it turns out the version I watched was an extended cut with the old Sarah Connor and her granddaughter at the end, which is not the theatrical/canon ending (which is just a voiceover with a dark road). So the whole time I thought the other films were just ignoring the ending of Terminator 2, and it was a very confusing experience until I looked it up to see if anyone else mentioned this and realized that I watched the wrong version. Also, the version I watched made no mention of it being an extended edition.
TL;DR Old Sarah Connor is not a canon event (until Dark Fate, anyway)
