Hello, I have an REI Co-Op e1.1 e-bike. I recently found out the hard way that its current tires are too thick (2.4in (6cm) ) for a bus bike rack (those one that go in front of the bus). Is it a good idea to change those tires to a thinner standard size, or is there a reason as to why it’s that thick?

One more reason front of bus bike racks are a bad idea. If you want bikes on transit, then they need to go inside.

Sorry I cannot answer your question, but as a transit advocate I feel the need to jump on this topic. If you search my history you will discover a much longer rant on the topic and why they don’t work.

I’d say check with your local bike shop: You might need to swap out the rims too depending on what you switch to, but you could definitely change tires.

I actually changed these to 2 inch wide tires with zero issues. The advantage of thicker tires is a smoother ride with the added cost of more weight (although on an ebike this is much less of a problem)
