ANKARA, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, in his strongest comments yet on the Gaza conflict, said on Wednesday the Palestinian militant group Hamas was not a terrorist organisation but a liberation group fighting to protect Palestinian lands and people.

the Palestinian militant group Hamas was not a terrorist organisation but a liberation group fighting to protect Palestinian lands and people

Then it is a liberation group that has war crimes on its hands. What Hamas did was wrong on so many levels. I think there is an overwhelming majority now see that Israel has done wrong for many years. This has been a massively provocative attitude towards the Palestinians. What Israel is doing to Gaza right now is also a massive wrong. Israel are using this as an excuse to take even more land in the West Bank. The problem will never be solved while the west support an apartheid state and ignore the actions against the Palestinians. But two wrongs do not make a right. There is no excusing murder by any party.

Gandhi is attributed to have said: “An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind”. At some point you have to understand how the people of Northern Ireland saw the issue. You will never bring all to justice for their crimes. At some point you have to draw a line and say this is where a new start begins. Israel needs to return the land stolen and let the Palestinian state develop. When people are impoverished to such a degree then this just invites extremism. Extremism only ever festers when people are under duress. Palestine will never develop while it is being hampered with Israeli aggression. This is the most obvious case for UN support to police the divide between the two states.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Speaking to lawmakers from his ruling AK Party, Erdogan also called for an immediate ceasefire between Israeli and Palestinian forces and said Muslim countries must act together to secure a lasting peace in the region.

“Hamas is not a terrorist organisation, it is a liberation group, ‘mujahideen’ waging a battle to protect its lands and people,” he said, using an Arabic word denoting those who fight for their faith.

Many of Turkey’s NATO allies consider Hamas a terrorist group, and Erdogan’s comments drew a swift rebuke from Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, who said they were “grave and disgusting and did not help with de-escalation”.

“I will propose to my colleague (Foreign Minister Antonio) Tajani to send a formal protest and to summon the Turkish Ambassador,” Salvini said in a note.

It has since strongly condemned Israel’s heavy bombardment of Gaza, which is controlled by the militant Islamist group, while offering to mediate in the conflict and sending several shipments of humanitarian aid.

Turkey, which hosts members of Hamas on its territory, backs a two-state solution to the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

To be fair it kind of sits between the Taliban (not a terrorist organization but a faction) and the IRA (terrorist organization that claims itself as an army).

It doesn’t exist to incite attacks outside of Palestinian claims, but it also uses terrorist tactics like hostages and unguided rockets.
