I am tempted to update to test out the journal app.

Wonder if it will be able to import journal entries from other apps.

Apple has the potential of creating a fuller detailing experience, but it probably won’t be there just yet.

I’ve been waiting for the Journal app to be released since they announced it. I’ve never used any third-party apps because they’re either ad-filled, or I don’t trust them with my data.

I also don’t like ad-filled apps, that is why I normally buy my apps.

I have used Diaro before and it was quite good. It could save your entries in iCloud or Dropbox and have apps for almost all platforms. I have also heard good things about Day One.

I played with the app for a bit and I think it is good enough to start with. If you don’t have the baggage of trying to import from a different app I think it should be good to go from the get go.

I would have liked it if it could have shown my memories on a map and I could go look at my entries at a specific place etc. It currently only filters on if things are there. Not on the details of what is inside of those things.

But I think it is a good place to start from regardless. And the ability to share things directly with the journal is quite nice. I have already done it with some of the memories generated with the photos app, so I would assume anything can be shared with it.

It’s super minimal so not sure what took Apple this long let alone why they can’t ship it for iPad and macOS at the same time they release it.

TBH I was expecting a little more given the wait. This seems clearly extremely low priority for them.

Also judging by the look and feel, there won’t be importing from other journal apps.

        Yes, it is very minimal.

I can’t get my workouts in there yet. It is all just put on a stack that can be sorted by time. And you can filter if it has some type of attachments.

You also can’t have different journals for different things as far as I can see.

And yes, this should be an easy port to macOS and iPadOS. Would be nice if you can put in hand written notes.

Hmm. As I understood it the app is for mindfulness. It’s meant to actually just journal your thoughts and feelings throughout the day, nothing more.

The triggers, like workouts or recent activity are just a way to automatically get a prompt to journal about it. Say after a concert or maybe a hike up a mountain. If you allow journaling suggestions, that’s what you get.

When you customize it, you have the option to enable Activity, where it will suggest you journal after some kind of physical activity.

If you know all this and I misread something and the feature isn’t working… beta 1 🙂

I am interested in trying out the journal app. I’ve used several different apps in the past that are mental health focused, such as Daylio and Finch. Although the journal app doesn’t replace them, it may work better just for dumping my thoughts.

I just updated to the Beta and tried it out for about 30 minutes.

The reflections is quite nice because of it’s probing nature. And if you just want to dump in your thoughts it will be good as well and you can add the auto generated memories from photos in there if you want.

But I suspect that the other two apps that you used will have much more functionality than this currently. I used Diaro and it has many features in there that I would still want the journal app to add.

Nothing for StandBy? I was so looking forward to it when iOS 17 was released but if feels unfinished. The clocks don’t have much customization, the night clock is too bright (I have to cheat with the reduce white point).

For now, it seems they are content with it. But I agree with you. There’s so much there, especially with customization and theming.

I’d love to try the Journal app, but I have a lot of data in a different journal app. Unless they offer a way to import, I’m likely sticking to my current one (Day One).

    Definite wins for me:

    • Weather widget small tile with added info (multi-day forecast especially)
    • Shared Apple Music playlists
    • Local awareness Emergency Alerts
