I’ve been trying to create communities that are missing and filling them with content as much as I can. That’s obviously not scalable as one person, so I try to encourage others via commenting.

Any thoughts around the idea of points (Similar to Karma) and seeing weekly/monthly ranking of content creating users?

Light hearted competition, and encourages contributing > lurking.

If you don’t like the idea, please share your suggestions. I’m just trying to think of ways to encourage contribution and capitalize on the hot iron we have going on now. :)

I definitely prefer no overall karma count. Facebook does a thing with a top contributor label next to peoples’ name in groups which could work. Maybe something fairly easy to attain such as ‘Active in community’ might be useful.

I think the less competitive the incentives the better as it just drives behavior that negatively impacts groups as a whole.

The last thing I would want is for Lemmy to turn into the karma whoring shithole we just left.

Karma should definitely be used as a metric to get rid of troublemakers, but hidden from regular users. However, I would argue that without a public display of karma there’s also no incentive to farm downvotes, so maybe we could stop using it all together?

The way I see it, we are here to enjoy ourselves and discuss topics with people all around the world. We don’t need a metric or competition for that.

I know that people are wary of the idea of karma counting because they don’t want it to become a performative karma farming dance like you often got on reddit.

For the first few months, I don’t see how bad it could be. But rather than implement it and have to remove it later, maybe just set up a competition of number of communities started, and/or posts/comments made.

I know it’s not ideal but you could probably make a shortlist of super active users and then manually comb their posts as a quick quality check. It wouldn’t be fully objective, but my point is you can pretty much do what you’re suggesting without counting karma.

And I do love that it’s impossible for people to show off their point/karma total on this platform. The reward should come from the enjoyment of contributing and helping others, not from a trophy sitting on your mantelpiece.

But that being said you make a good point. I’m also worried about losing momentum here when the honeymoon period dies down. Just mentioning some counterpoints you might not have considered.

I agree with you regarding the reward should come from the enjoyment of the platform and contributing. I wouldn’t want it to feel like a for-profit posting where you’re chasing numbers.

The goal is to encourage contributing, and to make it fun. I do like the idea of adding the communities started + posts + comments and doing a light fun post about it.

Yeah if anything the best way would probably be to make a big post asking everyone who’s proud of their extensive contributions so far to put their name in contention for recognition. And people could obviously nominate other users for the modest among us. And then go through the accounts of everyone who responds and make another post announcing awards/winners. Might be a nice way for power users to get to know each other as well.

Potentially, but I like these things being automated by instance mods since they have all the data. :)

Lol this is true. I’m an analog man, digital solutions are not my forte.

But at the very least that’d require getting a significant number of instance admins on board, and they probably have their own views as well. Ain’t no easy way to do it, methinks. One of caveats of federation is that there’s no central authority who can unilaterally implement these ideas. We have to implement them ourselves.

Absolutely true, which is why I posted it on Lemmy.world. I joined on this instance, so if figured I’d ask here and see.

Ah, I see, you were just considering your home instance. So if I want a shiny new award I’ll have to ask my admin, TheDude, about this proposal 😅. Good idea though

Yeah, it’s a bit rough trying to get the fediverse to agree on a single idea ya know. If it does work here though, it would ripple if it has a good effect.
