I have completed an entire month of self care and being sensible. The biggest reward for this is that I haven’t thrown up in a month, but one of my goals had a specific reward - if I don’t have an alcoholic drink for 1 month I can reward myself with Sky Sports Cricket, for the Ashes. I only went and did it!

Got a verbal offer of a new job last night. Hopefully today I’ll receive the contract, then I can hand my notice in!

I’m almost done building my first web site! I had almost no technical know-how prior to this, but I’m also beginning with JavaScript at the same time. It’s not amazing but I’ve learned so much. It’s immensely rewarding. While that probably is kiddie pool stuff to others even my junior, I’m really proud.

That’s awesome! I got my start just from self-teaching how to make a basic website then going from there, it’s a fun hobby in its own right but also a super marketable skill if you decide to take it further. Would love to see what you make, if you ever fancy sharing it DM me :)

I deffo will! :) I’ve thought about what it would be like doing this professionally, but that would be a ways away. For now, I just like making things!

Kids are off to school and I’m sitting in the sunny back garden listening to trains and having a fantastic homemade espresso. Perfect. All downhill from here.

I bought an air purifier to deal with the pollens - seeing as I had my first asthma-like symptoms ever the night before last - and I could not be more excited for it to arrive.

Also, jam on toast for breakfast.

Logged on to casualuk just try and promote Lemmy and this community but it’s now read only.

Part of me thinks it’s a shame and the other part is happy they just haven’t returned to normal.

I popped over to the site that shall not be named for a look, and was dissappointed to see so much of it was back open, with users posting away. But well done CasualUK for sticking it out.

Good on them to have stuck to their principles. For what it’s worth I messaged the mods over there asking them nicely to give us a link here. You can only ask.

A cheeky mid-week day off work and a fat lie-in for me. I’m 100% content at doing nothing of value today just enjoying the summer vibes.

Building a garage. Concrete pour went well, which is what I was stressing the most about. Not I’m just gradually laying blocks on evening and lunchtimes. It’s exhausting doing a day’s work then cooking, then spending hours building walls - but it’s very rewarding seeing it slowly turn into a garage.

I’ve felt pretty good this week mental health wise, so I’m taking that as a win. Glad the sunshine is finally upon us, even if it does turn the country into a special kind of sweaty hell. It’s our sweaty hell.

I sympathise on the mental health front. I’ve had my own struggles for a long while, but today has been a good week relatively speaking like yours. I hope you keep up the good fight, and enjoy the sweaty hell :)

I just set up a Lemmy site and am basically posting here to try out how federation works! Other than that… stressy meeting-filled work week!

Having your own fedi instance feels amazing honestly, it’s a lot of work to get things going (federation, feeds, etc), but having full control of everything is too good.

I don’t have a Lemmy instance but I do have my own Mastodon, been thinking about Lemmy but not sure.

Yeah, I run a Mastodon instance for the my city. It only has double digits of active users but that suits me because it’s not too expensive to run and I want to prioritse the user experience over growth for growth’s sake. I’d like to do the same thing with this Lemmy instance.

I think it’s one of the real strengths of the fediverse that you can be on a tiny, friendly instance and still play a part in a huge community.

I’m new to all this. Would you be able to explain the benefits of having your own instance? How does that work with regards to federations? Any info would be much appreciated 👍

I think the power of the fediverse is in there being more, smaller servers. It makes moderation easier and should scale better. It prevents one person or group getting control over the whole network.

The advantages of having your own server are about having control over the instance. I can choose which servers I do it don’t federate with. Also I know my data isn’t being misused. Plus, to be honest, I’ve got lots of experience running this sort of thing and I like the idea of offering the benefits of that to the community.

In my case I decided to base my Mastodon server and Lemmy server on my local area. I like the idea that the local timelines and local posts would be relevant for that geographic community.

Running your own server isn’t for everyone though. It takes a certain amount of commitment and money. I get some donations - which are lovely - but I’m still basically funding it out of my own pocket.

6 day weekend for me starting tomorrow with a three night stay at Center Parcs. Excited for it as my son is a little older this time we visit so he might enjoy more of it.

Welp, as the UK economically struggles, I’ve never been so economically stable. Seems like opposite day. Getting ready to move to Wales.

Planning to buy a house next year, it’s much cheaper over there. I also believe it’ll provide the most long term value, While sticking around cardiff provides enough job security.

Wanted to be closer to family and work on the other side of the water. At the time I was driving over the bridge three times a week.
