    On some level he’d be thrilled. Right? The PNW music scene emerged because nobody bothered touring there, so they did their own thing, told outside reporters a bunch of bullshit, and made a huge impact for decades to come.

    Arguably their greatest contribution was reminding people that guitars do not need to be complicated to sound amazing. Metal was disappearing up its own butt, with hair metal acts slowly forgetting it was an act, thrash getting slow and long and sludgy, and extreme metal gradually splitting toward math-rock and whatever Meshuggah was doing. So out comes this mumbly yelly oddball and his two dork-ass friends sounding louder and stronger and more interesting than all of that, with songs you could fit on an index card. No tricks. No intense technical skill. No symphony backup. Just pick good notes, and let people friggin’ hear them.
