Recently got some new R730XDs and R630s to go into the lab. Currently running a 144TB (+2x parity drives) unRAID server with Seagate Exos 18TB drives. Noticed once I added the drives the fan RPMs skyrocketed to 75% utilization. Tried some of the tricks online but wasn’t able to get anything to work. Had to reset the iDRAC for a different task and noticed the RPMs stayed low (35%) once that was done. Anyone else experience this before? Nothing seems to be different and no errors, but the fan speeds are fine. Temperatures are fine (30-32c/86-90f).

No, these refurbished Dell servers that use all compatible hardware (Dell, Intel). I just thought it was interesting that resetting the iDRAC solved the fan RPM. All I’ve plugged in to the servers are brand new Seagate Exos 18TB drives. Nothing else. I’m using Dell SD cards and a compatible USB device to boot from, but there were no fan RPM increases until I added the drives.

I’m not posting because I have a problem, but because this might be a solution to homelab fan RPMs.
