AFAIK your instance wont index a community from another federated instance until a member of your instance actually connects to the other instance via subscribing to a community (aka pasting the link in your search bar and subscribing). It’s not ideal, and I could be wrong. I am new to this as well.

You can use this link to see what instances federate with others and who is blocking who. lemmymap.feddit.de

it’s a visual map but I havent found anything else yet that shows it in another way. I think these are all growing pains that lemmy is going through. As more people join, hopefully other tools, extensions, etc are developed to help with these issues

Interesting, so where should I be searching? I tried going Communities -> All -> Search bar and typing (as an example [email protected]) but it says “No Results”

But then when I go back onto the “Communities -> All” page it’s there!

I think it takes a few minutes after you search for it to show up. I’ve had the same issue, and I usually can brute force it. If that doesn’t work, then you can check the map link and see if they are federated or blocked. Since you are running your own instance you shouldn’t have issues with blocking or being blocked for now. For example I was trying to make my community discoverable from Midwest.social, but when I looked at the map lemmy.ml (my main instance) and Midwest.social, while not blocking each other, do not appear to be federated. At least not yet.
