I tried to get into twitter and mastodon a couple of times, but always found the platforms strange and just gave up on it. What are some pros of this format that might be worth it to look around there again?
I haven’t really gotten into Twitter or Mastodon because those systems are organized around relationships with people. Apart from close friends and family that doesn’t match how my mind is organized. OTOH the Reddit / forum model is organized around interests and ideas. That clicks for me. I engage more with ideas than with personalities. Because of that I’ve been a regular Reddit user for many years while rarely checking in on Twitter. Since Lemmy follows a similar model I think it’s likely to engage my interest the same way.
I think you’ve just eloquently put what I always felt about those platforms. I never quite know what’s going on over there.
Yes i think this must be my problem too, altough i probably could find people to follow that would engage me more. If someone can recommend some good users id like to hear it.
Twitter is great for first hand breaking news. Wether its a disaster or something F1 related, it’s always on Twitter first.
I got rid of my account years ago because I don’t see the benefit of interacting on it or following certain people. That might be the problem with Twitter: i read a Tweet and leave again. Often that tweet is just embedded somewhere else. Because it’s mainly about quantity of content, Mastodon isn’t interesting to me now.
Pros: there’s always content and a lot of it.
Cons: you’ll get caught in negative emotional spirals pertaining to drama. You’re always talking to the community at large and the larger community is toxic enough to be a Superfund site
