Our car is insured comprehensive, but I’m wondering from what amount it would make sense to claim? AA no longer has a no claims bonus, but obviously premiums can go up if you claim. We have some cosmetic damage which we caused ourselves, so would mean we’d pay our excess. Would it be wise to discuss with our insurer AA? Advice welcome, thanks.

Yeah it’s hardly even worth the time to do the paperwork. If you shop around you can probably get it cheaper anyway.

I’m gonna suggest that if you’re not going to claim on an $800 incident, you probably should increase your excess. We always set ours to the highest available (I think it’s like $1k-2k I can’t remember). In my view if you can afford to pay $800 out of pocket then there’s no point having insurance at that level.

True, paperwork can be quite annoying.

Valid point regarding excess. It does make having an accident a bit less stressful when you have a lower excess.

          Thanks Dave.

If you make the claim you may risk your premiums going up.

On the flip side if you ever plan to sell it, the cosmetic damage will be used against you.

If you can afford it I’d have the damage fixed without making a claim.
