I have some Amazon funny money from Father’s Day, so per the title, I want something that writes big and easy. No calligraphy nibs that depend on perfect position to be smooth. Possibly delusional, but hoping for recs that orbit around either side of the $100 USD mark. Gold nib and impeccable fit&finish is not necessary, but I know I’m looking for a luxury nib at a daily-user price, so feel free to disabuse me of my hubris. If something is out there but not on Amazon in the US, I can buy toilet paper and air filters with that and get the pen elsewhere.

For some reason “no calligraphy nibs” makes me feel compelled to recommend a 1.5mm Pilot Parallel. It certainly doesn’t depend on a perfect position to be smooth, and if you frankenpen it into an Opus 88 it will be a joy to write with and cost you around $140 total. Hold it with the nib at a 45 degree angle and your writing will look classy as hell.

My search for a weirdo pen? Maybe, maybe not.

The viability of the threadiverse for discussing niche hobbies? Absolutely.

Since I posted this, I actually dug up a Hero 330 whose nib I snipped off and then ground down with a dremel and smoothed with automotive sandpaper probably 20 years ago. Filled up with Herbin Perle Noir, it’s almost what I’ve been looking for, but if I get off its (admittedly generous) sweet spot, it just simply stops writing.
