There are a whole battery of risks I’d be willing to take to start a business if I just knew there would be a net stopping me from becoming homeless.

If we cut the bullshit from office jobs we could have everyone doing maybe a day or two’s worth of work and getting the same amount of actually productive stuff done. Get all these newly underemployed office workers to do some actually productive work 2 days a week and then all the construction/manufacturing/frontline workers can work less too.
Imagine no longer being chained to the desk and actually getting to teach kids or help old people or cut trees/replant forests for a bit every week. Actually doing something worthwhile, and maybe even touching some grass.
I love programming but I hate how it’s basically my whole life now.
If you’re actually manually replying this all over the place you are a king and I hope you don’t stop lol
AtkinsRéalis (known as SNC-Lavalin at the time) is a Canadian construction company that was at the centre of a huge scandal in Canada. They were caught bribing the son of Libian dictator Gaddafi to get a contract to build a prison, allegedly for political prisoners.
While the Justice Minister was having this company prosecuted, the Prime Minister (Justin Trudeau) demanded that she give AtkinsRéalis a slap on the wrist and a deferred prosecution agreement. When she refused, she was driven from her position.
Canada’s government has a history of propping up bad actors like this, and goes out of their way to support several oligopolies that run significant chunks of the Canadian market. Bell/Rogers/Telus own most of Canada’s mobile and internet offerings, Loblaws/Sobeys/Metro own most of Canada’s grocery stores, much of Canada’s produce and meat are controlled by cartels, etc… The maple syrup cartel is very powerful and wealthy and yes you’re reading that right, there is a maple syrup cartel and even a maple syrup black market.
One special mention goes out to the Canadian Real Estate industry, which is full of actual crooks all over the place and just disgusting. Did you know in Canada it is legal for a real estate agent to represent both sides of a purchase? Agents also will refuse to work with any of the bargain agencies that charge less than the standard 2.5% commission, basically locking them out of the industry. This crap is part of why housing prices have bubbled so hard, and together with price fixing by landlords they have managed to keep Canadian housing prices at levels so stupid homelessness has increased several times over.
Canadian people are often too fixated on not being seen to be a problem, what some call “politeness”, to the point they won’t even stand up for themselves. That unwillingness to protest or try to change things has allowed this to happen for a very long time. Because of this awful “politeness” many Canadians are even cheering on new laws limiting union action.
tl;dr Canada is a banana republic and Canadians are cucked
If a user wishes to know more about why an instance is defederated, then they should just make a post asking about it, or they should dm the admins.
I think the obvious counterargument is that being transparent-by-default increases trust and cohesion. I for one would be more willing to support an instance that is transparent in this way. Understandably there is an increased burden here and if it’s a problem I think a few users would have some suggestions about how to handle it.
That’s nice dear
stopped reading here lol
Debt is one of the primary ways we are controlled. Eliminating as much of your debt as possible as fast as possible reduces the ability of capitalists to control you. It’s just smart.
lmao didn’t even think to invert FireWire
wireless house fire
I am with you on this, I don’t want a cooktop with a damn battery and software updates. That’s ridiculous.
Nothing stopping you from using diluted lye / oven cleaner and wiping it off, just be very sure you take the necessary precautions. Do not breathe that shit in or let it get on your skin.
The bigger issue is people thinking that voting is the only way to influence anything. Reality is that it is the absolute bare minimum you can and should do. People need to be getting involved in their local communities, their unions, the campaigns for local politicians… you cannot change the whole country and you need to stop trying. Change your immediate area, and let those changes become the new base voters are starting from when making decisions.
I didn’t understand for so long how people could just sit down and do shit, while I hated doing things like dishes so much it made me irrationally angry.
Just knowing I have a problem helped. With some consideration and research I got ideas on how to deal with some of my problems. Example: hate washing dishes? Reduce the number of dishes you have at home and replace as many as possible with dishwasher-safe alternatives (assuming you have a dishwasher). Then they can’t pile up so bad and it becomes less intimidating to take on.
What didn’t help: suggestions from people without ADHD. “Just do it”, “schedule it”, “task tracker”, etc… yeah fuck that.
Couldn’t disagree more. Immersion comes from the details, not the fidelity. I was told to expect this incredibly immersive experience form RDR2 and then I got:
Yeah that didn’t do it for me.
I would love to have a smaller phone. Not thinner, smaller. I don’t care if it’s a bit thick, but I do care if the screen is so big I can’t reach across it with one hand.
One of the reasons I skipped the other consoles but got a GameCube was because all the first party stuff was buttery smooth. Meanwhile trying to play shit like MechAssault on Xbox was painful.
I’m a union executive and activist for multiple causes like Right to Repair and accessibility-first design of public services. I’m not worried about people questioning my creds.
My culture values speech, equal rights, good public services, and secularism. This is the bare minimum I expect of any newcomer: I do not want people who do not value those things in my culture.
A decent amount of people really do just park their ass on the couch and cease existing. I’ve watched more than a few people retire and die shortly after from having nothing to live for.
