Canada is setup to have a Conservative majority after the Liberals utterly ruined everything for 2 and a bit terms. The Liberals are a centre-right party that campaigns as a centre-left party and it has caused a huge rightward-drift.

We’re pretty screwed because somehow people think the solution to unaffordable housing and whole industries being captured by oligarchs is austerity.

Like many things, people hate it because of its associations with other things. They will happily throw it out even if it has good uses. Here have some spicy examples:

Some people experience gender dysphoria and may benefit from medical intervention? Nah it got abused by ideological idiots so it must always be bad. Karl Marx says workers must arm themselves? Nah guns are bad, I know this because rightoids like them.

One of the old rules: “there are no girls on the internet”. Probably due to be reworded but the point is not that women don’t exist, it’s that your gender is actually irrelevant in most discussions.

My Steam Deck plays a lot of games, more than I even expected it to. Honestly I’m not sure where this “iffy library” crap comes from.

It’s like when Bush Jr. pushed for the adoption of reading programs across America that focused on phonics, so people took a rebellious stance and taught kids “balanced reading” which taught kids to memorize words rather than the sounds that make up words.

The result: an epidemic of illiteracy to own the Republicans. Bush was/is a warmongering piece of shit but he was right about phonics being the correct way to learn reading.

I’ve never seen self-proclaimed leftists hurl more vitriol than when an openly-socialist labor organizer in my union said they were for freedom of speech (for humans) and generally supportive of firearm ownership. Absolutely wild reaction.

That company has this amazing ability to suck the fun out of even the most interesting things. Their greed is honestly shocking, even Wizards of the Coast isn’t that bad with Magic: The Gathering and no one thinks of MTG as having a fair or reasonable cost of entry.

My friend got himself a resin printer for much less than the cost of an army and started making and painting his own figurines. He’s having a great time.

Lowering the string height on my guitar made it so much nicer to play. Didn’t need to spend thousands, just needed a little work.

I don’t typically see people advocate for the cheapest gear, just not to go all-in. There is something to be said for how much you can learn from stuff that requires a bit more tuning or customization.

In airsoft we had people who didn’t even know there were other options show up with $40 clear plastic guns from Walmart (they’re awful) and guys with $2000 air-powered guns from the best brands show up all the time, and both of these people sucked. Typically, they both also had a bad time, because neither could realistically learn anything from their guns considering they were already as good as they were ever going to be.

My advice was always to start with a low-mid range electric rifle that can take a high-capacity magazine. Having like 400+ shots in a match is more than enough. Pick a design that is easy to get parts and accessories for so you can build on it. Someday you grow out of it and then you drop the real money on an airsoft rifle, but you can run a good starter rifle for a long time. I only replaced mine because it catastrophically broke after years of rough play: I learned a lot from modifying it and it made my next gun choice much more educated that I ever could have managed as a newbie.

I live in one of the more humid areas of Canada and when people tell you it can’t get humid when it’s that cold I wonder if they’ve ever experienced how the cold can just cut right through your clothes.

Summer humidity is absolutely the worst though, and people die here every year because of it.

I still strongly dislike limiting cosmetics so much, especially in a setting where they can mean so much. Darktide’s $20 skins pissed me right off: role-playing is 100% part of the game and that price is absurd.

Quick Celsius breakdown from a Canadian:

• 0 to -10 - that stereotypical TV winter experience, where everyone is skating and sipping hot chocolate? Yeah that’s like half the year here. You better like hot chocolate.
• -15 - We enjoy the fresh air, others will probably find it painful to breathe directly; put on a scarf! Do not brush your teeth immediately before going outside unless you want to experience mint-flavoured pain.
• -20 - Canadians put their boots on by now. Exposed skin on a windy day can get frostbite in as little as 10 minutes.
• -30 - We will debate putting a coat on to put the garbage out at this temperature, usually erring on the side of caution in case your kids lock you outside again. Seriously invest in good winter gear for this, this temperature can kill surprisingly fast and it only gets increasingly unpleasant from here.
• -40 - turns out you can’t form snowballs in hell because the snow is too crispy

Here in Canada I’ve seen much the same behaviour for both Liberal and Conservative voters. “I vote Liberal because I’ve always voted Liberal” is a surprisingly common statement especially among the older generations, and to a small extent even the Green party has a few loyalists in BC.

Always voting the same way no matter what happens is just giving your vote away for free.
