As someone who had their GTX 1080 die during the pandemic and had to fork over waaay too much for a RTX 3080, I only recommend upgrading a i7 8700k type CPU now if you really NEED the performance. The next line of Intel CPUs should be a better upgrade.
I went with a 13th gen ugprade and I saw my performance double, but that was only for a few games I play. No meaningful change for the older ones.
I have a i5-13600k on the z790 chipset with DDR5 memory. Super happy with this upgrade as a relatively cheap interim solution. The cache and DRAM do a lot of work and the processor overclocks to 5.6 GHz easily.
I’m planning to get a 4070 or 4080 Super next year, because I need the RTX 3080 in another system.
