obviously not. often they don’t break all at once, but start with corrupting smaller areas of sectors

for music what I use is AIMP. I only hope it can work with wine because I don’t want to run a VM for it

So unless your usecase requires 2TB+, SSDs are a better choice. Or if it needs 1TB+ and also has immensely high rewrite rates.

I have multiple complete disk images of various defunct installs, archived on my nas. That is a prime example for stuff to put into network storage. Even if you use them, loading them up would be comparable in speed to doing it off of an HDD.

does this also stand for when shares are done with SMB? I’m mostly worried about random access there being worse than with a local HDD

I would rather not buy so large SSDs. for most stuff the performance advantage is useless while the price is much larger, and my impression is still that such large SSDs have a shorter lifespan (regarding how many writes will it take to break down). recovering data fron a failing HDD is also easier: SSDs just turn read-only or completely fail at one point, in the latter case often even data recovery companies being unable to recover anything, while HDDs will often give signs that a good monitoring software can detect weeks or months before, so that you know to be more cautious with it

Maybe you see a usecase that would see someone without knowledge or equipment need tons of cheap storage in a single desktop pc?

Personally I have 4 TB and some in the PC, and it’s almost full. a few VMs, a couple of snapshots, music because I prefer a local player over jellyfin, almost all programs that I didn’t want to keep on my small SSD, and a bunch of other data.

I know someone who wanted to save his dashcam recordings to his PC. I could not get him to tell why does he want it, and figure out if it would be important enough to get a big drive, but currently he can only store 2 days of recordings on the SSD. People around me are often on a tight budget, and I didn’t want to buy him an SSD unnecessarily big (before I got to know he wants to do this…), both for the cost and the lower lifespan

that’s good to be aware of, but using nvme drives for lots of storage does not seem to be economical. (I assume) in most cases large amounts of storage like this is used for archival and backups, where speeds don’t matter over what good HDDs can do.

well until you need capacity why not use an SSD. It’s basically mandatory for the operating system drive too

because if you roll your own root cert, nobody’s web browsers will see it as trusted, they all will warn the user that something weird is happening and treat the site as if it was plain HTTP. no lemmy server would federate with it for the same reason.

I’m not, but this is one of the reasons I never wanted to move for college, and also part of why I don’t want ever to live at a rented place. I don’t believe “they are out to get me”, I don’t believe I would be targeted, but I do believe that it can happen in the wrong environment, and you never know. I’m also aware that I wouldn’t necessarily notice it, or if I did I wouldn’t know what was compomised.

I don’t normally think about this at home where my family lives, but sometimes I remember that they don’t always lock the door, or that sometimes we have guests.
if I had a housemate I would expect it to be a similar case, except if that was not really a choice. I would still put a simple password on my computer, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to set up disk encryption just for that

Every time I enter my PIN for my phone, I always cover the screen before entering it in case my parents have cameras in the house. And even more so in public, I’d fear CCTV getting my PIN.

It’s good to be cautious to having cctv see your passwords in public. but at home, again it depends but shouldn’t be a concern.

So unless you have old hardware, I see the remaining use for sata as hdd-only.

I’m all for open source, but being open source does not mean that it cannot be, or even that it is unlikely to be malicious

my country has started a program a few years ago that gives a lot of money to couples that produce children, primarily to be able to afford buying a house. it has contributed to many problems, from convenience marriage, to parents literally not caring for their children, but maybe the worst of all is that it has raised property prices by the exact amount of aid received for producing 2-3 children.

I’m sceptical of it. where would all of that money come from? the “data industry”, that is all about making the most believable lies and most effective ads? or land value tax that will make sure to outprice you from your own house if rich people flood it, or if improvements happen around the area?

the pension system, while I believe it is needed, I worry it cannot be sustained for too long anymore because currently it relies on infinite growth everywhere: year over year more people needs to work and pay taxes to finance the pension of the elderly.
