  • A shitty narrator can get me to hate a book I like.

And that is where I see potential for AI. There are quite a few books which I’d love to listen to but they are all narrated by a guy whose narration I can’t stand. AI would open the possibility to choose a voice and I might actually get to enjoy those books. It’s Amazon though so the ethical implications and quality concerns are something I’m worried about.

  • where people can only extend empathy as far as a situation that it’s possible for them to get into.

I wonder if there is a distinguishing term for this.

Empathy = The ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes (no matter how different they are from you)

? = The “ability” to imagine yourself in a situation that someone else, who’s very similar to you, experienced.

Yeah, people become fascists by demagogues tricking them into thinking that their REAL problems can be solved using fascistic means.

People become zombies by demagogues biting them.

Are demagogues not zombies? Otherwise it’s kind of a circular argument.

You can’t make people fascist without lying to them, but lies of that magnitude need critical real world problems to gain traction.

That’s just wrong. You can if you believe what you are saying is true. I’d say it’s even more likely that you will be successful in spreading ideas if you believe them to be true.

I could say you lie to people because you demonize fascists. But you believe it’s true. I believe fascism is a symptom and if we really want to get rid of it we need to look at and fix the root causes.

    the underlying societal issues…

You gave me so much hope. I really thought you’d say “the underlying societal issues that lead to someone becoming a fascist”. But then…

    …granting fascists an opening

Where do these fascists come from that are tricking people and look for openings to poison good peoples minds? Are they evil demons sent by Satan himself? Are they just born bad people?

But hey, you keep on fighting the good fight against these evil humans like you’re on a crusade. I’m sure the current generation of fascists will be the last one if we just keep on doing what we’ve been doing.

It’s not about tolerance though. You can both have empathy for someone and not tolerate their behavior.

If we don’t have empathy for the people we can’t tolerate we will only ever fight symptoms and not root causes.

This is especially made clear with the example you gave. Because guess what, we have nazis on the rise again.

If you truly want everyone to have empathy for everyone no matter what then you can’t make exceptions. If you can make exceptions you allow for others to do so too while maintaining the guise of being empathetic. Even if you, your loved ones or anyone else you deem worthy of empathy are the exception in their eyes.

You could do both, being curled up on the sofa with a sandwich and make the world a little better, by reducing your meat consumption. There are very nice vegetarian/vegan sandwich options.
