  • Unless the whole system crashes, … would be a plus

I already knew someone would reply that, and addressed it.

You can’t say any of that. You are enjoying a product of a system as it exists. If it crashed and would never be rebuilt, all you’d have left is independent cinema/games. This already exists, and you could go consume that. But you don’t.

There’s no guarantee that in absence of big corpo with profits there will be anything produced like your favorite TV show.

I can promise you one thing: if no one pays for what they watch, there will be no TV shows. Scripting, cast, production, and delivery, all cost a lot of money. If tomorrow you inact a low that prohibits charging money for media content, no new system will emerge. Or what you’ll see is kinda what YouTube has: short videos with built-in ads, and potentially sponsored content that you’ll never know about.

So, right now, you’re damaging the only system we know that produces content that you enjoy.

Humans are inherently creative, creative work would still be made

Ah, I see. You want someone else to work for free, so you get your content for free.

Maybe you never talked to an independent artist. Who are in their 30s barely manage to make their ends meet, and are looking for any chance to get into a different career path.

No, anon, you in particular aren’t morally safe. You make lame excuses for your inability to pay.

  • Meh, you’re just building an echo chamber. Everyone around is of the same opinion, everything against is downvoted to hell, sometimes bans are handed out.

And you are starting to believe you’re normal and you’re keeping your space clean of all the “assholes”. But instead you’re just way too far up your own ass most of the time.

Your downvotes don’t hurt. It’s just sad that this ambitious project that could’ve easily replaced reddit, turned into a circle-jerk. The content and opinion-diversity on everything that’s reachable from my current instance is approximately /r/antiwork. I could just go back and spend all my days browsing that one sub without any loss. But such pompous name “fediverse”.

You got nothing folks. Every community is about USA only and all the top posts are “trump bad”, “capitalism bad.” Like nothing else exists. You sabotaged yourselves. There’s no fediverse. There are 20-40k people chanting together “fuck trump, fuck musk, fuck capitalism”. On every instance, in every thread, on every topic.

And you know what, I agree with all three. But even to me you look pathetic. And as my multiple tests confirm, you do not accept any disagreement, and you cannot brin any rational argument to the table, you can only echo.

  • While your mega corporation is extremely rich, if tomorrow everyone starts pirating, that corporation will go bankrupt in a year. And all those TV shows you enjoyed won’t be produced anymore. No more new movies with cool stunts and special effects. No more games with insane graphics.

As a consumer of that big corpo content you don’t have the moral high ground to say “I never cared anyways about your shitty mass-consumer stuff”. You care because you pirated it to watch/play it.

So in the end, you only got your cake because someone else overpaid for theirs. Infinite replicability argument does not hold because it costs money to make content. And it’s a risky investment, so at times you want to get more back than you invested, cuz other times you’ll spend 50 millions on a game nobody wants to play, and lose 40 of those.

By pirating you inadvertently cause damage to the industry and if everyone followed your steps your favorite games/movies would ceise to exist. But for now it works cuz most people don’t pirate. So, are you morally safe, anon?

That’s a far cry from how china suppresses protests. And really a small individual example. Overall there’s a clear freedom of expression and civil protest in the US. The same absolutely cannot be said about china.

  • Everyone hates on the guy, but he’s right. An average heterosexual relationship is between an overly sure person and a follower. There’s some hormonal explanation to it, I believe.

By observing perfectly normal happy heterosexual partnerships you’ll see exactly that dynamic. One person mostly decides, the other mostly accepts. And they’re both happy.

I had the luxury of asking some fairly smart and self-aware women why they behave like that with me, instead of trying to have an equal relationship, and their answer was that they simply like it that way. They like the comfort of things being taken care of and decided swiftly and confidently. And regularly their partner would do just that. They thought it was absolutely fine and actually pretty attractive.

Lemmy is a queer/progressive echo chamber, so the 95% of the population reality seems wrong and someone expressing its normality without over-explaining gets downvoted. Like the guy you were replying to. But in fact, it’s a solid dating advice for the majority out there.

Bob Ross gets a share of the price for selling your soul to Google. He’s a tool in corporate abuse of humanity. Otherwise he would’ve long time ago quit YouTube with a clear public statement.

Facebook is a product that cost billions to develop. It scaled so fast at some point, they developed a big data framework on top of MySQL, cuz refactoring wasn’t an option. Their tech stack is the funniest chimera out there. And it only happened because everyone loved it so much. Facebook costs billions per year to run. And you get it for free. I mean, you pay with your data, just like on YouTube.

Lemmy, you show as usual that you cannot even basic math. You’re not entitled to criticize capitalism until you learn how to count. You sound stupid.

People don’t understand that the way a backdoor is usually implemented is not going to be obviously saying “backdoor_here”, neither it will look like a some magic code loading a large string and unzipping it on the fly – that’s sus af. What you will see is some “play video” functionality that has a very subtle buffer overflow bug that’s also not trivially triggerable.

    This already happened with WhatsApp.

  • well, yes. But also this is an extremely difficult to price product. 200$/m is already insane, but now you’re suggesting they should’ve gone even more aggressive. It could turn out almost nobody would use it. An optimal price here is a tricky guess.

Although they probably should’ve sold a “limited subscription”. That does give you max break-even amount of queries per month, or 2x of that, but not 100x, or unlimited. Otherwise exactly what happened can happen.
