I think sane lefties might have a bit of a point. But then the tankies are also saying it while praising authoritarian state capitalist nations which produce hundreds of billionaires, that undermines the sane lefties.

Bruh, that photo is like 35 years old. I bet most people under 50 couldn’t even name the guy despite it being right on the helmet.

The same age as the Tienanmen Square photo, incidentally.

I feel like you think you made an awesome point or something, but… I don’t really care? At least not in the context.

By the way, I don’t even know if I disagree with you in general, I just think passing a photo of Michael Dukakis around on a forum full of Millennials and Gen z kids, isn’t really going to make any kind of point for you.

Tankies are liberals in denial. Like a closeted homophobe.

Edit: I’m pretty sure someone I blocked replied to me, but I can’t tell who. 😂

Oh hey, it’s the person that tried to argue that Marx was somehow an Anarchist, despite arguing against Anarchists and Anarchism his entire life

        liberalism is right-wing

Liberalism has several meanings, it depends on the context whether it’s right or left leaning.

Typically, in Europe, the traditional right leaning parties would call themselves “liberal”. Their philosophy is classic liberalism, which places an emphasis on economic freedoms, like a free market, limited government, laissez-faire policies,… It is basically the equivalent of what they call “libertarianism” in the US.

When conservatives in the US call people “damn libruls”, they are usually referring to people with a philosophy of social liberalism, which places an emphasis on social justice, political freedoms, civil rights, individual autonomy, … and other progressive themes. This is the left leaning version of liberalism. Tankies are also against this because individual and political freedoms are the opposite of the authoritarian philosophy they stand for.

Liberalism has several meanings, it depends on the context whether it’s right or left leaning.

Liberalism has one broad meaning, ie an ideology supportive of individual liberty through strong private property rights and ideals of class mobility. Ie, it’s the underlying ideology tied to Capitalism. This ideology can be to the left or right of locational medians, but in the international context of leftism vs rightism it is firmly right-wing.

Typically, in Europe, the traditional right leaning parties would call themselves “liberal”. Their philosophy is classic liberalism, which places an emphasis on economic freedoms, like a free market, limited government, laissez-faire policies,…

See my previous paragraph, this is the correct form.

When conservatives in the US call people “damn libruls”, they are referring to people with a philosophy of social liberalism, which places an emphasis on social justice, political freedoms, civil rights, individual autonomy, … This is the left leaning version of liberalism.

Not quite. Social liberalism is tied to economic liberalism to form “Liberalism” overall. These ideas are tied together for one cohesive world view. A Marxist or an Anarchist is likely going to be more progressive than Liberalism when it comes to Social Issues. Referring overall to “Liberals” as left-leaning simply for the fact that the social aspect of liberalism is progressive fails to take the intertwined economic aspects into account.

Nothing exists without context, trying to chop ideologies into their component parts without recognizing the context of these components is an error.

If you believe your fundamental rights are life, liberty, and property in equal measure, you’re a liberal. If you believe that considering property as a fundamental right that would constrain the other two, you might not be.

Basically, yes. Leftists seek collectivization and see private property rights as antithetical to freedom and societal well-being.

There’s a name for liberals that don’t deserve to be insulted, it’s social democrat.

        They’re almost there.

Is it “tankie” to say leftists are Socialists, ie Anarchists, Marxists, etc, and right-wingers are Capitalists, ie Social Democrats, Liberals, fascists, etc?

Whole right. So basically only a quartile likes being called a liberal.
