The European Union heaped further international pressure Sunday (4 August) on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, joining Washington and Latin American nations in refusing to recognize the win he has claimed in the recent election marked by fraud allegations.

The latest rejection comes as Venezuela’s opposition backed outside calls for the results of last week’s disputed presidential vote to be published, as the Pope said Venezuelans must “seek the truth” and warned against further violence.

Western powers are willing to recognise Putin as the ruler of the Russian Federation

“A European Union spokesman said the elections were not properly monitored, nor conducted in a free and fair way. The governments of the UK, Germany and the US echoed this.” -BBC on the Russian 2021 elections

    Here’s the article

This has always happened in the past Russian elections. The EU doesn’t push harder on this topic because they know these efforts won’t influence Russia

On Venezuela however, there’s a lot more chance that international pressure will cause changes. Maduro GTFO!

Sure, they’ll complain about it (and I notice you just skipped the mention of Saudi Arabia), but they will continue happily pretending like the leader of those countries aren’t dictators as long as they’re willing to play along with their desires and ideology.

The US and EU only care that Venezuela is led by a dictator because that dictator is opposed to their interests. If he was a pro-US, pro-EU, pro-NATO dictator, they wouldn’t give a fuck. Just a double standard.

My brother what can they do?? They put diplomatic pressure and sanctions in place but there’s nothing more a country can do to influence another nation.

There are US and EU sanctions in Venezuela since years. But they still manage to live in their limited space.

Saudi Arabia is an Absolute Monarchy. They have a king and all that bullshit. The king is a de facto dictator BY DESIGN. that’s their constitution.

What do you expect us to say?? “hey, how about you abolish your whole political system? Because you know… We kinda don’t like it”

I don’t like it either bro but it is what it is. We have to live with that bullshit. Unfortunately there is no solution to everything

Name a dictator that gets political support from the EU

They can stop selling weapons and bombs to Saudi Arabia? Just a little idea, you know, just from the top of my head.

Of course i would appreciate it if we stopped selling weapons.

The West is not perfect by any means. (and I noticed you skipped answering my question about dictators with EU support)

My point is that country leaders have limited influence. They can’t influence everything like you seem to suggest

I have never said that they should do anything (except stop selling weapons). My entire point, the entire way through this conversation, is that they have a double standard. I was just pointing that out - the ruling elite of “the West” don’t truly care whether a country is a dictatorship or not, they only care about how willing they to go along with their hegemonic interests.

If they were truly opposed to dictatorships, they would not arm them. Therefore, they don’t actually fucking care. It’s a pretty tight proof.
