Salt literally saved my rental car less than 24 hours ago when I couldn’t finish a mountain climb to my cabin in the woods. It got me to a place to leave the car AND it cleared a curve on the hill when left to sit over night so I could get down the mountain.

Sand would not have gotten it done.

ok that is a really strange specific situation though. Im really not sure how exactly salt helped over just a shovel, Like you cleared a spot but you would not be able to get the car in unless the snow was completely melted away , but usually its about wheels spinning which is where the sand comes in to get traction and get out.

Ice on the road from other drivers using the same tracks on a very steep curve. Shovel wouldnt have done anything because it was basically half an inch of ice. Sand might have got me up out of the way, but salt melting the area overnight (and several feet downhill) made it possible for me to safely negotiate the corner on the way down the next day as well.

yeah I would still say your thing is situation specific though. like folks living in mountains should do a bit more than like general everyone should have these things in winter in their car.
