but that’s pretty optimistic, even for me

I suspect your optimism is unwarranted. My teenager is already talking about people posting about Trump saving TikTok. Trump & Co are a bunch of morons but everything they do rests on the premise that the American public are even bigger morons.

Personally, I blame Ivana. Without her, the Trump organization would probably have failed outright in the 80’s and Donny would be in a nursing home trying to convince a dust mop that he’s the richest bestest boy ever instead of grifting away while he helps sink the entire country.

Getting in behind this was a massive own-goal for the Democrats. No matter what legitimate arguments there were for getting rid of Tiktok, the political cost was always going to be too high for the actual benefits. Especially when American social media companies like Twitter and Facebook are actively working to destroy American democracy. Comparatively speaking, Tiktok was far less of a threat.

Ban was bipartisan. Supreme Court upheld it. Biden said he wasn’t going to enforce it. Trump says he is giving 90 day period for them to divest, with the possibility of making it partially state owned. Whole situation is stupid, but almost all on repubs.
