US Vice-President JD Vance accused “bureaucrats” of rebuilding the Berlin Wall, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio slammed the designation as “tyranny in disguise”.

In an unusual move, the foreign office directly replied to Rubio on X, writing: “We have learnt from our history that right-wing extremism needs to be stopped.”

What does left and right mean for you?

Going by its historic origins, progressives on the left, reactionaries and monarchists on the right, the Nazis were absolutely reactionary and thus far-right. They were only progressive where it suited them, like having women in factories freeing up men for the military.

Speaking purely of economic policy, left would be a collectivist economy and right an individualist one. In that regard, the Nazis were not quite far-right, as they favoured government intervention and influence, again, because of war efforts. They did a few token campaigns to appease workers, but didn’t limit or abolish privately held companies (as they wanted the rich and powerful on their side for the war). And you’d only get disowned if you happened to have the wrong ancestors, not because you were explotliting your employees.
