California cannot ban gun owners from having detachable magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, a federal judge ruled Friday.

The decision from U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez won’t take effect immediately. California Attorney General Rob Bonta, a Democrat, has already filed a notice to appeal the ruling. The ban is likely to remain in effect while the case is still pending.

This is the second time Benitez has struck down California’s law banning certain types of magazines. The first time he struck it down — way back in 2017 — an appeals court ended up reversing his decision.

The type of person who owns a gun, wants an illegal extended magazine, will use it for crime, is not the kind of person who owns and knows how to use a 3d printer

It’s also super easy to not kill people with guns. If someone is dumb enough to get into the latter, I’m gonna assume they aren’t smart enough to do the former

Like, obviously there’s gonna be some psychopath who uses 3d printed parts for a shooting at some point, but I can’t imagine your typical gangbanger sitting at his desk troubleshooting his printer, asking /r/3dprinting why it keeps delaminating at 53mm. Maybe it’ll become an issue once they can’t just get a solid, reliable expanded magazine for $30 from the next state over.

Nah, you’d be surprised. There’s plenty of well-populated, high-activity groups online these days for people who 3D print guns and gun accessories. There’s dozens of Discord servers where people share STL files all day long. There’s a lot of overlap between gun enthusiasts and 3D print enthusiasts these days.

The “will use it for crime” part is where it stops overlapping. If you’re smart and tech savvy enough to operate a 3d printer, you’re probably smart enough to not be a criminal. I’m well aware of FOSSCAD and the inappropriately named AWCY.

Do you really think all violent criminals are stupid?

Plus, you do realize that the criminal doesn’t need to buy or operate a printer, right? There are hundreds of etsy shops and people on Facebook that will print whatever you want and mail it to you.

Sounds like you’re the only one to talk about what might overlap. Are the guns to keep your feelings safe?

              I don’t own any guns.

Well, I do, but one is my grandfather’s hunting rifle and one is a shotgun for pest control/clay pigeon shooting, and both are stored at my mom’s farm.

Oh well fire up the 3D printer because apparently guns are fucking awesome and everyone needs them, with absolutely no oversight or accountability.

That’s the usual level of pro-gun honesty though. “I don’t own any guns except for the 2 guns I own”.

                  Nice strawman there, buddy.

And while I own two guns, I don’t possess them or rely on them for protection. That’s an important distinction to make.
