President Volodymyr Zelenskiy marked Ukraine’s Day of Unity with the introduction of a draft law that allows multiple citizenships, a move that would make it possible for foreign fighters and ethnic Ukrainians outside the country to hold Ukrainian passports while not giving up other citizenship.
Zelenskiy said in an address on January 22, which marks the 1919 Unification Act of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the short-lived West Ukrainian People’s Republic, that the law would not apply to “citizens of the aggressor country,” a thinly veiled reference to Russian citizens.
Ukraine has been fighting to repel a full-scale Russian invasion, launched by the Kremlin in February 2022. The Ukrainian government established an officially sanctioned foreign legion just days after the invasion, with some estimates putting the number of foreigners at around 2,000.
Given the state of things in the U.S. this doesn’t sound half bad
I think you forgot the active war part.
In the US, groceries are expensive and we may never be able to buy a home.
In Ukraine, your house for the next year or two is going to be either a cheap barracks or a literal hole in the ground. You’re expected to fire live rounds at Russian conscripts. You have to see the dead bodies of your friends and enemies alike, and you’ll have to deal with either killing someone, or not having killed someone who went on to kill a friend.
I’ll take the expensive food, thank you. War is hell
Well, i did just find sirloin tips at the big box store mislabelled as stew meat for $5.49/lb. I bought 11 pounds, so maybe it’s not so bad,
I’m slightly less concerned about inflation than I am that the U.S. is on the verge of having its geopolitical power collapse while also nearing the conclusion of a slow moving coup that has been in progress since the 1980’s. The end result of those things will likely be a religious ethnostate, or naked corporate control of every aspect of our lives. Maybe even both!
But it’s a point well taken. The future in the U.S. is slightly uncertain and possibly not as fucked as I fear, but the present in Ukraine is a known entity.
I was just thinking about that myself, and how I wish I wasn’t already medically fucked to the point of not being able to do this…
I already speak passable Russian, tho I would need a heavy refresher so wouldn’t be super difficult to swap to Ukrainian… and I really don’t have anything or anyone here…
