Do I need a license to kill a squirrel?

I know this would vary from locale to locale, but, presumably, there are some animals that do not require a permit to kill (mice in mouse traps, for example). How does this work? Is there a list of “always OK to kill” species?

If you intend to eat it, a hunting license is required.

  That will vary widely. Near me you can kill as many as you want, it’s legal. Now why you wouldn’t eat them is beyond me, since they are delicious.
