Scarification is still alive and well in many places. It’s not that much different than tattooing.
Tattoos and excessive piercings are voluntary and not a cultural expectation.
That’s not true in every culture. There are definitely cultures that would expect facial tattoos, piercings, neck rings, etc even today. Just because western societies wouldnt expect it doesn’t mean no other cultures would.
We still cut off pieces of newborn baby’s dicks.
