According to their statement they’ll still be offering HoloISO as an option for users. It’s possible they were just using it to leverage msft for a cheaper license.

As long as the platform supports SteamOS (or a fork of it), I don’t care what it ships with.

I do - because shipping with Windows means that I pay for a Windows license when buying the product.

In some cases, forgoing the Windows license actually costs more because all the crapware they pre-install subsidizes the cost of the hardware. It really depends on vendor though. I got a $40 discount by complaining to Lenovo saying I didn’t want their Windows license, but it still came pre-installed (I’m guessing the license was valid too, but I never tried it) because it’s too expensive to change production processes to offer something different.

Ask the obvious, are there any real competitors in the market. Contract developer driven products are not equivalent to a company with full time developers. This is the factor that actually matters. Stuff like this has no value because the venture capital is not buying into the community, it is only targeting return on investment to exploit the end consumer.

That’s dumb, it should be the other way around. By default it should come with Linux, and you have the option of picking the Windows edition instead and pay that Microsoft tax.

I would say is not a bad choice for Microsoft, they certainly don’t have many options right now. Also, they didn’t have the need to use much money, since they always had OEM licenses to throw at laptop/pc companies.

They get to push Xbox easily on mobile devices while having Steam as an option. They can’t sell Xbox with a Linux device (they won’t).
