recently got this knife as a gift and it’s my first Damascus steel.

i am never happy with the edge, it has teeth, it doesn’t glide. fine when cutting bread but awful for an apple :/

is that normal for damascus?

No, my Damascus knives hold an edge well. From the picture it looks like it’s chipping along the seams between the metal layers, which is a bad sign. Folded steel should still be fully welded together if done correctly. Have you tried resharpening it from scratch? The edge on it looks pretty wacky.

that’s what i see, yes. i can even feel the different layers with my fingertips.

It’s a gift and i don’t trust the steel enough to resharpen from scratch. I am afraid of opening up one of those layers that end up vertical to the edge

I wouldn’t buy this knife but now that it’s gifted, i don’t want to break it either :/

It is not normal for damascus but there could be a lot of factors here. How are you sharpening it? What sharpening system or sharpener are you using? Who made the knife? Can you talk more about the manufacturer?

a knife maker from France: Patrice Etoc. He forges the damascus himself.

for now i only touched the edge slightly with a ceramic rod.

I would certainly reach out to the maker directly. That seems like a real issue if he’s forging the blades himself.

thanks, we will try to reach out to him to hear what he has to say

photo i took the day i received the knife

photo i took today after getting rid of that 50° angle

that damascus layer looks more like a crack now 🤷
