Can someone explain to me why so many meme post titles on Lemmy are “[X] Rule,” please?
Because 99% of memes coming through Lemmy are coming from 196. The 196 community has only one rule, to wit, “If you visit you must post something”.
People without much creativity would often simply title their post “Rule”. Ones with a bit more will frequently make a pun around the word Rule as their title. At this point it has become customary to make a rule-based pun or reference when posting, but is not required.
This is, however, specific to 196 so if it bugs you (or if you otherwise don’t want to see relatively low effort memes) you can block 196 and you’ll cut out about 90% of the Rule traffic since it pretty much all comes through here at [email protected]
I see. So far the only thing I’ve minded is that I don’t understand the titles. Do you mind telling me what 196 means? I get that it’s a Lemmy community. But why 1, 9, and 6?
Edit: I visited the page and the community info wasn’t any help. I did follow the rule, though. Neat idea.
r/195 was the original group. The name came form the creator’s dorm number, and it had the same rule that current 196 has. r/195 was closed, iirc because the creator didn’t want to moderate it anymore. r/196 was created as a continuation of r/195. r/196 died with reddit, and moved to this community on lemmy.
It’s from Reddit. A group of roommates made a meme subreddit named after their apartment number. I think that was actually r/195, and they got bored and closed it, so r/196 was a spinoff of the original meme community.
this community has only one rule, you must post when you visit the community. titles include the word rule to say they followed it
I just beat off, and I made it a game to see how long I could play before I finished.
This is glorious
