We all know it’s a Thomas Riker statue.

My question is where, there is a community center of sorts but it’s a bit off the beaten path. There wasn’t a park or similar community space the last time I was there (admittedly that was 20 years ago). They could put it at the airport or in front of the hotel or maybe down by the docks but that’s about it.

If it’s anything like the Janeway statue near to me in Bloomington, Indiana (still haven’t made my pilgrimage despite going to Bloomington to visit my mother all the time), it will be on an urban trail.

I’m still waiting for them to install our RoboCop statue. I offered up my front yard but was declined

According to The Register, it’s in Ruth Pond Park? I looked it up in Google Maps, and it looks like it’s nicely developed enough that a statue somewhere out there wouldn’t look too weird.

Here’s the weird part. Riker only ever says that he’s from Alaska in the show. He doesn’t specify Valdez. So where does Valdez come from?

Both the Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 223) and StarTrek.com identified Valdez, Alaska as Riker’s place of birth. [1]

I mean sure, why not Valdez? Riverside, Iowa decided Kirk was born there because he said he was from Iowa and no one ever claimed it before them, so I guess they got there first. They have a statue and a marker.

Someday, I’ll have to visit the Janeway statue in Bloomington, IN (Voyager did establish her as being from Bloomington because Jeri Taylor went to IU), the Kirk statue in Iowa, the soon-to-be Riker statue in Valdez and maybe finish at Vulcan, Alberta. A Star Trek road trip!

Two minutes plus about 14 hours because I was going to post it this morning but took a small Lemmy vacation instead.

I think we all could use the occasional Lemmy (if not internet in general) vaca, it’s good for the brain. So I’m told.

Btw, grats to you and the new management! I shall refrain from spamming this place with memes.

Thanks much! And yes, memes are what 10F is for. This place is for slightly more “serious” Trek discussions (although we still hope everyone will have fun). We don’t want to make this place stuffy like Daystrom was on Reddit. Sort of a step between that and 10F. For fan stuff and Trek talk that isn’t just silliness, but hopefully will still foster entertaining and interesting discussion.

Just please, everyone, for my sake, don’t get into big arguments about what is and is not canon. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from decades of Star Trek, canon exists on a spectrum at best and there’s plenty that is open to interpretation and such discussions get needlessly ugly. I think if we can be civil with each other as fans, respect each other’s opinions even when we disagree, especially on which Star Trek anyone happens to personally dislike, this place will be great. Aside from you weirdos who like Sub Rosa. You folks are just objectively wrong. Seriously, Beverly has sex with a ghost candle and you guys think that’s a good idea for an episode?

          But I digress.

I have saying I use that I would love it if other people adopted: The best Star Trek is the Star Trek you like the most.

Anyway, I’m really happy to be part of the mod team on both communities!

That’s a remarkably healthy attitude to have. I’m gonna start saying that now.

I hope you do, because I really hope more people feel that way so you don’t have people making sweeping statements like “Discovery is not Star Trek” or “Star Trek started getting bad with Voyager” or whatever. If someone thinks that way, fine. But it’s a personal opinion and plenty of people disagree about what is “bad” Star Trek.

I was born in the late 1970s. I’ve been watching Star Trek since I was a toddler.

I remember when TNG was “bad Star Trek.”

I remember when DS9 was “bad Star Trek.”

I remember when Voyager was “bad Star Trek.”

I remember when Enterprise was “bad Star Trek.”

And now Discovery is “bad Star Trek.” (Amazingly, I haven’t heard that about LD or SNW yet.)

What do all these things have in common? Other people love them and think of them as good Star Trek. Which is fine. The good thing is falling in love with a galaxy where, in general, scarcity is a thing of the past, science and exploration are considered to be vital, and people try to talk things out before they start shooting at each other. Because those things are what makes Star Trek what it is and all of those shows have that in common.

“Discovery is not Star Trek” or “Star Trek started getting bad with Voyager”

Yeah, fuck that noise. Gatekeepers suck all the air out of the room and contribute nothing.

I remember all those complaints. Funny how the tune never changes? It’s like a dirge for douchebaggery.
