These photos for some reason made me go look up an old MTG card from my childhood.

There are creepier versions!
I saw the one with the teeth and it reminded me a bit of the hermit crab camouflage strategy. A cornucopia of plants living upon the back of an ambush predator would make for a fun, brutal horror movie. A play on the natural cycle.
