I, being someone who works with computers, have had some luck with most of my favorite subs being here already.

Despite that, some of my hobby ones still aren’t here. NFL exists, but it’s the same as nothing so far. Soccer I couldn’t find at first, maybe today it already does? Also, no sign of fantasy football.

I also followed a bunch of History subs, but looks like most people in Lemmy only care about science and technology.

Tell us, what is missing for you?

Not really. It’s incredibly frustrating and I’ve def lost some faith in humanity.

I thought /r/selfhosted would be ready to jump but everyone is like “but there’s no users on lemmy” and “you’ll split the community” and “we’re going to go dark for two days - that will teach them!”

Consequently there’s been no support for any single refuge.

Additionally people have set up several communities here with similar names in the past but now mods aren’t responding so it’s all a bit of a mess.

Idk which ones you’ve tried but I know there’s [email protected]

As far as the “no single refuge” thing, I think that just comes with time as people decide “imma post in this one”. Just pick one and go for it tbh.

If you search from your own instance, I think it only shows the subscribers from your own instance. So browsing from lemmy.ml there might be one subscriber but on lemmy.world there would be 77.

Actually I just noticed that when you search for say, “selfhosted” you’ll only be shown results that people have already accessed from the instance you’re on. So when you search for a community, if none are shown that doesn’t mean none exist, just that no one on your instance have accessed them yet ?

Give it time, things are accelerating really quicklyn

And for what it’s worth, people who have turned their back on Reddit and are now here, probably aren’t contributing much or at all to discussions on Reddit… So it’ll seem to skew more to voices that aren’t switching or haven’t yet.

I wish there was something like AskHistorians but I highly doubt I’ll ever find something that good without a solid moderation team and very strict rules. Feels like it will either be Reddit (and fuck that to be honest) or nothing.

I still can go through rabbit holes on Wikipedia at least so there’s that.

Even with solid moderation I feel like it’d be harder than for other subs just because you really need to have a decent population of people who really know what they’re talking about for it to work

I suspect that if Reddit got that bad, centralised alternatives such as the Hive would mop up a lot of the userbase. Yes they might not come over to Lemmy, but they could be enticed if Lemmy gets a bit of a split up of beginner/advanced levels of control.

So I’m using Jerboa for android. A d I click through to the list and I see, say, atheism on one of the instances, but how to do I add that to Jerboa?

I’ve tried the search function for subscriptions too but it doesn’t come up. Am I missing something in how to sub to subs on other servers?

I have the same question, I saw somewhere to put the URL into the search and wait 10 seconds, but it still doesn’t show up :p

Jerboa just doesn’t seem to be very feature filled yet. Atm it’s all we really have and I’m greatful for it, but unfortunately many features are still missing outside of the standard website. Hopefully with the growing popularity things will be improved more and more.

I’m really pleased by how many are starting anew on Lemmy. I giggled like a little kid when I saw HydroHomies was already up.

Yes but there’s only 7 subscribers and I’m the only post :(

Then again it’s a niche community about a fantasy series, I’m not surprised it doesn’t have much going on yet.

I created mine at /c/guitars , I’m not sure if the reddit community at large will join though. I’m hesitant to push it anywhere, it feels like sleazy self promotion. I just wanna talk about my hobbies with other hobbyists, and leave all the corporate greed back at reddit.

I just hope Lemmy becomes huge so niche things will start popping up, I miss specifc band and game subs like r/KGATLW and r/factorio for example. Though I have also found the searching of communities across instances to be somewhat unreliable. I’m also hoping for some good meme communities to flourish.

Not really. My most visited subs on reddit (fuck spez) were Rimworld, Zomboid, Hunt Showdown and various hobby/profession subs (graphic design, illustration, itap, photography). I’m fairly confident a UX/UI sub will pop up sooner rather than later considering how techie Lemmy’s userbase seems to be. Iirc there is a gaming related comm on beehaw, but the odds those three games will be talked about is rather slim.

Edit: also, Swoleacceptance. Recently got back to the gym due to mental health. Was a gym rat years ago but life got in the way.

Totally understandable and fine. But then you can’t complain about there being no content, that’s all.

This is all just part of being an early adopter on a platform that relies on user-generated content.

Yea, not really complaining. I knew there will be stuff that would be missing stuff by adopting it so early.

This post is aimed more to encourage people to do exactly what you said, btw. See shared interests, engage in the same discussions and all.

Absolutely! Didn’t read your post as a complaint I’m just clarifying for the other commenter 🙂

The main problem with recreating /r/NFL is it relies on news from places like Twitter, and the sort of people moving to Lemmy are likely to have also left Twitter…
