Voters in Portugal go to the polls Sunday in an early election that could see the country join a shift to the right seen across Europe after eight years of Socialist rule.

Socialist rule? What countries are those? AFAIK it’s been more like

    NL: right to ultra right
    BE: center to center right
    FR: center
    DE: center to center left(ish)
    NO: right
    SV: center left to right
    etc

so enlighten me about this “socialist rule”.

Like in many European countries the social democratic party calls it self socialist party. It gets especially odd in Portugal, because the big center-right conservative party calls themselves ”social democrats” 🙄

I think that refers to Portugal being ruled by the Socialist party for 8 years

Actually in any sane country the Portuguese Socialist party would be considered neoliberal

cmeio rightly pointed out that “socialist rule” did not necessarily apply to Europe, but Portugal specifically. My understanding is that you mean the same, but in a rather less polite way, correct?

Germany very generously described, would say they’re also rather center to center right.

      News exaggerate everything nowadays.

I think “populism rule” would fit a bit better.
