The Thing is a 1982 American science fiction horror film directed by John Carpenter from a screenplay by Bill Lancaster. Based on the 1938 John W. Campbell Jr. novella Who Goes There?.

The film stars Kurt Russell as the team’s helicopter pilot R.J. MacReady, with A. Wilford Brimley, T. K. Carter, David Clennon, Keith David, Richard Dysart, Charles Hallahan, Peter Maloney, Richard Masur, Donald Moffat, Joel Polis, and Thomas G. Waites in supporting roles.

    For anyone interested, the novella is very much worth reading.

    It’s pretty short, very creepy and paranoid, and you can clearly see where the movie themes come from.

        I read that last time I was commenting on a thing thread maybe a year ago and someone linked to it, I did like it.

        Whoever wrote it had to have read the original story because they both spend much more time exploring the inner world of the thing and it’s nature than the movie do, this fan fiction entirely so.

        Does Wikipedia link to the novella now?

        If not, I’d highly recommend finding a copy rather than reading the plot summary, it’s a very involved story that is very impactful past its plot.

        The plot also differs from the movie and is worth reading as a complete story on its own.
