Norm was a comedian whose audience was never really the folks in the cheap seats. He was playing for other comedians. Even when he was playing to piss them off.
Like that roast where he used an entire deck of generic gags - cards in hand! - and then sat down and opened a newspaper. The laughs he cared about were from people onstage with him. The schmucks at home couldn’t understand it. The professionals around him couldn’t believe it.
How many of the weekend update jokes did he write? I assumed they mostly came from the writer’s room (and that he may or not be there, but it at least wouldn’t be all or maybe even mostly him)
He had writers too, but he was largely in charge of Weekend Update, I believe. There are some good interviews with Jim Downey, who worked closely with him.
Here’s a montage, if anyone wants to see some of the OJ jokes that got him fired from SNL
(Link fixed!)
He knew he would be fired if he didn’t stop. He didn’t stop. That absolute legend.

Here he is on Conan’s podcast: https://youtu.be/OPjqzMl2VX8
Nice, thanks for that link!
Your montage is just a link to youtube. Well played?
He sent you to YouTube. What, you need him to find the video for you too? Lazy ass millennials.
Seriously? I don’t think it’s too far out of the norm to expect a link to point to an actual video, and not just the website.
c/whoosh
They were joking
I think it was just one guy joking.
Might not have been a guy
I wondered, but I didn’t see the /s, so… /shrug
Also, I’ve literally heard Boomers say “Lazy ass Millennials” before, and mean it. /shrugagain
I know millennials that are grandparents. I think you should be able to figure it out, shrug-bro.
Maybe. It was so ambiguous though, it really could have gone either way, so I chose a side.
Oh, and, /shrug
You…still find it ambiguous even after it’s pointed out. I’m even more impressed.
I didn’t put an /s because I honestly never believed someone would be dumb enough to think that was a serious post.
I’m honestly impressed.
Omg, fixed! Sorry. I meant to delete the timestamp part that was added to the URL, but absentmindedly removed too much…
