Finland has virtually no pedestrian/cyclist fatalities in their roads. In 2018, Canada had 332.

Slowing cars down and priotitizing other road users is communism… We cant allow this! We need to preserve our freedumbs!!!

We cant implement the things Finland has done. We have winter here, unlike them!

“We deliberately have narrow lanes, so the driver doesn’t feel comfortable”

🤣 I love that so much. Driving should be made to be uncomfortable because it keeps drivers alert. It also helps to disincentivize driving over other forms of transportation.

It drives me crazy here when there’s a road with 3 lanes in each direction, big open space, and a wide sweeping gradual curve, but then a sign that says “50km/h” and a speed trap.

I could cruise down that street and take that corner at 100km/h easily. Why did you build it that way if I’m meant to be going 50! It just makes people feel frustrated if the “natural” speed is so much faster than the posted speed.

That’s a poorly designed road, that’s why. Only highways should be fast because there is no expectation of cyclists or pedestrians being remotely close to those vehicles.

And those 3 lane roads, at least around here, have poor pedestrian and cycling infrastructure beside them, so they really do need to be much slower than they are.

Reduce enforcement on highways and increase enforcement on residential roads. The Autobahn gets that right: if you’re only threatening yourself and other drivers, then the responsibility is on yourself and other drivers. If you’re threatening pedestrians without a ton of metal surrounding them, fuck off.

I don’t know. I had to use the highway today, and people drive like your life doesn’t matter. Excessive speeding, dangerous lane changes, going too slow, etc.

I think automatic enforcement of highways should be more common, and it would help cut down on racing, too.

Something like 60% of car-related fatalities are single-vehicle and something like 25% of car-related fatalities are inflicted on pedestrians and cyclists.

That perfectly describes the Montreal highways with 70 kph signs on them. Also, all of the traffic is going 100, so it’s kind of difficult to actually obey it.

Exactly, narrow lanes mean they actually have to pay attention to what’s in front of them. Roads should be designed so people don’t feel comfortable going above the speed limit.

America needs other forms of transportation.
