Apparently they announced the game at the same time as the layoffs so they’d be able to release a demo and some promotional material. That way the people they laid off would still be able to show off their work to prospective employers as they job hunt.

I’m sure it’s also a final hail Mary effort to attract the attention of investors so they might fund the rest of the game, but still, seems like a pretty practical way to shelve a project — definitely not as crazy as the headline makes it sound.

Yes, it seems to be both to help the laid off folks add to their portfolio and a hope that its popularity will draw attention from a publisher. Seems like the best strategy available to them in the circumstances and I hope it works out for them.

I hate the trend of “former developers of popular game company make new things”. A game is more than just a handful of the devs that worked on it, and bears no influence on whether or not anything they create in the future will be good.

Kinda like how Back 4 Blood was never meant as a follow up to Left 4 Dead, just a generic zombie shooter…

Then they realized they had ONE GUY who worked on Left 4 Dead, not even in a leadership or management role, meaning they could legally market it as “From the creators of Left 4 Dead”, game wasn’t even called “Back 4 Blood” till they realized that

They used an actual photo from their offices as the thumbnail.
