If I’m honest I usually choose Kaiden. I don’t want to start the whole ‘Ashley is a space racist’ argument on Lemmy but I didn’t like her attitude in the first game. Kaiden may be a bit bland but a good lad. You’d be okay with him marrying your sister.
It’s a bit shallow, but teen me liked girls more so why would I ever have chosen Kaiden over Ashley? Lol
Nowadays I’m more open to either, even though they have the same paths their personalities differ enough to make either decision interesting.
Aye it’s something that makes each play through have a wee spark of variety
true, but I could fix Ashley. I can’t make Kaiden more interesting
He does eventually cook you steak and chug beer though so that’s something.
You can keep them both alive if you save Jenkins.
I can picture the headline now, “16 years later Mass Effect fans still haven’t found this 1 elusive secret.”
I always save Kaiden because he has the same voice as my main man Carth Onasi from KOTOR. Ashley was always dull to me.
Holy shit. Mind blown. I’m be never put that together. But now I can’t unhear it.
F for Kaidan
It used to be Ashley was my choice to save. She was my romance option for most of my ME1 runs. So it made sense.
But for whatever reason her voice acting in ME3 grates on my nerves. “Are you sure you’re not with Cerberus?” Repeat ad nauseam. Gah, I hate it. Now she dies every ME1 run.
Plus Kaiden is far more useful for my play style I find. Dudes way better than Ashley.
Sentinel is way more useful than Soldier but Kaiden mistrusts you just as much and it’s just as annoying.
This is true. And I’m not sure what the difference is between the two voice actors, but Ashley’s voice just grates on my nerves in ME3.
(I will admit I like her story line in ME3 better, but I still have to get through the annoying mistrust.)
No matter how boring, I’ll take Kaiden over that space racist any day of the week.

Kaiden was always too meh for me.
I wasn’t even sorry to let Ashley die. She was condescending, hostile, and antagonistic for no real reason. And she’s supposed to be a love interest? If you’re playing anything but a full renegade, it’s hard to imagine she’d even like Shepard.
Kaidan’s characterisation fits better regardless of your Shepard’s alignment, he’s a more useful squadmate in general (especially in ME3), and he’s better voice acted.
I guess she appeals more to those who like people that challenge their views more. She can be rough, but she is a military person after all.
