    I had to look this one up, it’s a reference to a mountain climber, George Mallory. From Wikipedia:

    Once, when asked by a reporter why he wanted to climb Everest, Mallory purportedly replied, “Because it’s there.”

      Instead of climbing the mountain “because it’s there,” he’s descending into the inverted-mountain-shaped hole “because it’s not there.”

        I think you would need to know the quote. I heard it a long time ago and never forgot it for some reason.

      That’s understandable as it occurred at very high altitude indeed. You could say it literally went over everyone’s head, when it happened!

    The more I see posts that say “I don’t get it”, the older I feel. I guess I never realised how much Larson’s comics reflected and commented on the time they were written
