I guess they’ll go after r/Lemmy next.
It seems reddit still haven’t learned what a Streisand effect is lmao.
They hit r/LemmyMigration and it’s creator once already, right before they announced the Spez AMA. They were quietly unbanned after a while with claims of it being a “mistake”.
I have a feeling they’ll try a much more thorough purge soon, despite all evidence showing how disastrously that would backfire.
deleted by creator
You bet! I was flabbergasted during the AMA, in one post spez was crying reddit is not profitable, while in another one he was bragging about managing reddit for an insane amount of years, and I was like, seriously?? After all these years you still haven’t learned how to make money??
No wonder the slew of mistakes with such a CEO lmao.
I’m getting 8-10 year old accounts that haven’t commented for months jumping on any post I make where I mention Lemmy. So far, Lemmy is apparently a place for “CCP apologists” and “tankies”.
I’ve yet to run into any of these individuals. Sounds like some people at Reddit are not so happy.
I mean I like the lemmy-verse, but the main devs behind Lemmy are totally tankies. It’s the reason why a lot of people are hesitant in joining
This is the main developer (one of the only two developers) - if the avatar wasn’t enough, have a look at the “essays” repo in his account… https://github.com/dessalines
Just seems kind of silly to avoid a whole platform over the personal ideology of the creator. No one seems to have any problem with some of the extreme anti-human ideologies that a lot of social media ceos have.
The devs run lemmy.ml and lemmygrad.ml. The admins on both remove anything which is negative about china in any way, even if completely truthful like the genocide they are commiting against the uygurs and about the imminent succession crisis, for “orientalism,” something not even listed as a rule, and yet openly criticise the US government. They allow content approving of the uygur genocide. A person coming in to join-lemmy will see lemmy.ml as their first instance. Some of the other major instances have defederated against both if not only lemmygrad.
When I joined I checked out the mod log and saw a few mentions of “orientalism” as a reason for removing comments which I thought was weird.
It sounds like a huge waste of time removing mention of an ongoing human rights crisis. I guess it means a lot to them to have a little safe space on the internet where they aren’t reminded about painful things.
Yeah I first joined lemmy.ml but learned about how they do this so I switched here. I think the community is better here anyways
That is simply not true. First, there is no such “genocide”, and when it comes up, it’s generally supported by sources that confirm just that (by a variety of sources that might even on the face disagree with each other on other issues). On the other hand, when I see people claim there is a genocide, I’ve yet to see something that isn’t directly tied back to Western propaganda. Additionally, I don’t see removal of content that’s critical unless it’s markedly false (whether intentionally lying, or just unintentionally spouting propaganda they think is true). There is no specific privilege given to China.
Huh. I’ve never seen this type viewpoint. You’re aware there are multiple witnesses and videos out there? This isn’t even up for debate.
I’ve yet to run into any of these individuals.
…you wrote, only half an hour earlier 😉
Lmao I feel like I’m being trolled somewhere.
Witnesses and videos of what?
It is in fact up for debate, or at least it should be. Your adamant refusal, and assertion that it isn’t up for debate, doesn’t make it so.
Here’s a statement from The World Bank from 2019 making clear that the allegations are not true: https://www.worldbank.org/en/news/statement/2019/11/11/world-bank-statement-on-review-of-project-in-xinjiang-china
And here’s one from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (what religion is predominant amongst Uyghurs?): https://www.oic-oci.org/docdown/?docID=4447&refID=1250
Edit to add: And if a United Nations statement is more appealing to you, try this: https://documents-dds-ny.un.org/doc/UNDOC/GEN/G19/240/77/PDF/G1924077.pdf?OpenElement
Are the China Cables documents not valid? https://www.icij.org/investigations/china-cables/read-the-china-cables-documents/
AP News reports that “The documents were given to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists by an anonymous source. The ICIJ verified them by examining state media reports and public notices from the time, consulting experts, cross-checking signatures and confirming the contents with former camp employees and detainees.” https://apnews.com/article/china-cables-ap-top-news-international-news-china-race-and-ethnicity-4ab0b341a4ec4e648423f2ec47ea5c47
Your link to a UN document seems to be broken, but this report from the UN cites “Serious human rights violations have been committed in XUAR in the context of the Government’s application of counter-terrorism and counter-“extremism” strategies.” https://www.ohchr.org/en/documents/country-reports/ohchr-assessment-human-rights-concerns-xinjiang-uyghur-autonomous-region
Edit: Aaaand I’ve now noticed this user was banned and their comments removed. Well, I hope others can enjoy the sleuthing I did above regarding the human rights abuses being committed against the Uyghurs in China.
look at any thread over there about the Russia-Ukraine war…it’ll turn a lot of people off for sure
Exactly because we made the mistake once, in more naive times, we don’t want to make it again…
No one seems to have any problem with some of the extreme anti-human ideologies that a lot of social media ceos have.
That’s patently untrue
That’s patently untrue
Yeah you’re right there unfortunately. The ideologue in me got to my fingers first 😀
No worries 😆
What specifically bothers you about his essays? Are you bothered purely by the topics, or by the actual content?
Good try, dessalines, but I ain’t biting 😉
they looked at lemmygrad
It’s literally one section of a very wide website/community. It’s like looking at /r/conservative and then thinking all of Reddit is a right wing cesspool
sadly, that’s more than some people do.
Yeah, I got a bad taste of crazy tankie stuff on my first venture into Lemmy when I decided to check it out. Luckily I’ve not seen much extremist rhetoric once I joined. I do see where it’s scaring off a lot of people from reddit, that said, I’ve seen lots of people promoting non-communist instances specifically, as well as the idea of federating/defederating as an antidote.
If you recall, reddit used to have that as well. There was a time (5+ years ago I think?) when communities dedicated to teen porn and upskirts and legit hate groups were regularly on /r/all before they all got banned. It comes with the public forums/community aspect. In a big diverse forum where there are communities you like and connect with there are bound to be those tou don’t like…and then some you really don’t like.
Full damage control mode
The more damage control they do the more damage they do too
It can’t happen any other way when you’re acting in bad faith. Sad to see the site go, but excited for the future!
It’s a controlled demolition.
This is exactly what happened when the folks behind the hostile takeover of freenode started banning people for talking about libera.chat. And we see precisely how well that went for freenode. This is what happens when business people make decisions.
Freenode went down the crapper? Dang. I used to use them a lot back when I didn’t know anything about Linux
Oh, yeah, it was this huge, frankly surreal, thing. The founder of Private Internet Access decided he wanted his own IRC network and bullied his way into being in charge, along with a team of cronies and yes-men.
Dang. You are just full of good news. That’s my VPN too!
The dude might be actually insane, calls himself the crown prince of Korea
Is being a complete crackpot a requirement for being a CEO nowadays?
nowadays
former freenode people migrated to libera.chat. not sure what to do about the vpn
Not renewing for sure!
This behavior generates backlashes, People will be interested more in the alternative and the talk about Reddit alternatives will be more active
You can’t make this shit up
This is so deeply pathetic on the part of reddit tbh. CEO’s gotta power grab i guess.
Not surprising. They’re looking to prevent another Digg migration. It doesn’t look like it’s working.
What exactly is the difference between kbin and lemmy?
They’re just different softwares that communicate over ActivityPub. They’re both link aggregators, so they’ll be similar in functionality.
For an easy comparison using established names: One is Reddit, one is Digg, but they can communicate with each other and show each other the same content, and you can just pick which one you want to use.
The Fediverse allows people to just choose the platforms they prefer, and then talk to everyone else on the Fediverse regardless, instead of having to create multiple accounts all over the place to talk to specific people.
Honestly I hope this implosion gives more people a push to move discussion somewhere that isn’t monetized so heavily with awards, NFTs, and other crypto junk.
a little confused here, because on a brief perusal, it seems kbin is rife with crypto junk
undefined> Honestly I hope this implosion gives more people a push to move discussion somewhere that isn’t monetized so heavily with awards, NFTs, and other crypto jun
Yes please
One nice thing about kbin is that it isn’t run by pro genocide, North Korea loving Tankies.
Can you elaborate? Genuinely. I’ve seen this take a few times now.
Here’s a Mastodon thread with the basic facts, here’s a post calling out pro-CCP moderation on Lemmy with screenshots and all, and finally here’s a Raddle post with much, MUCH heavier accusations that I’m yet to fully confirm and which would make this even worse if true. Either way I’m considering Kbin more instead of Lemmy.
Do remember that the OP is on beehaw.org which is NOT run by genocide denying tankies. It just runs their software and the tankies don’t have any control over that code its explained well in the docs.
Yeah that’s the beauty of federation! If you don’t like the team that runs one Lemmy instance, you can just find a different instance to use.
So am i
and finally here’s a Raddle post with much, MUCH heavier accusations that I’m yet to fully confirm and which would make this even worse if true. Either way I’m considering Kbin more instead of Lemmy.
while i’m not sympathetic to lemmy’s moderation i happen to know about raddle, and: it’s probably worth noting that the person who runs raddle is a known, serial sockpuppeteer who has repeatedly, violently threatened and stalked users on reddit he doesn’t like and used sockpuppets to troll and harass users on raddle itself. i would accordingly not consider him a particularly reliable narrator, and heavily doubt anything he has to say about anyone. he is just not a trustworthy figure in general.
And that’s why I listed known facts first and that only at the end, all those claims would need independent verification
Definitely a shame to see this. But with all new communities it’s important to be vigilant for that kind of toxicity, and I’m definitely gone the moment I get a sniff of it seeping in over here. Not like reddit was any better, you could barely go a week without a random subreddit being taken over by awful people.
Thanks for the in depth links. I appreciate it. That’s unfortunate. With that, that’s the beauty of open source and having different options for instances to join. I know Beehaw doesn’t subscribe to those uh ideals. I’m also on kbin, which can interact with Lemmy and everything. I don’t know - I’m still brand new to all of this.
@jherazob @OverfedRaccoon So I just joined Beehaw. Isn’t that a Lemmy instance?
It is, but not run by the same people as the main one, in fact it’s run precisely by the kind of good people you’d WANT moderating your community
@jherazob That’s what I thought, and why I joined! Glad to see the confirmation.
kbin is PHP, lemmy is Rust.
I’ve joined both in hopes of seeing which one thrives the most in terms of users in the niche communities that made Reddit worth visiting for me, personally. So far, they seem largely similar. Points to Lemmy for having an Android app ready to go. Kbin has one in early, early beta that is (according to the GitHub) lacking in certain functionality.
You should be able to participate in any community from either though, right?
From my understanding, you can interact between the different platforms. They are a little different in their approach, and I don’t fully “get” kbin just yet, but you can post to and interact with Lemmy from a kbin account.
Check out https://kbin.social.
IMO the UI of Kbin is much better, although I really miss the ‘collapse thread’ function. That’s a deal-breaker for me.
Same principle (which is why they are compatible), but different tech and developers. Kbin also has a section where you can read and write regular hashtag-based mastodon-like posts in communities instead of completely relying on threads.
I mentioned that subreddit was banned in one of the top post on Reddit and it seems like they suppressed my comment.
A lot of that going on right now.
Spez and his band of corporate stooges are looking more pathetic by the day.
Have they not heard of the Streisand Effect?
This shitshow just gets funnier every day. I’m SO glad I got out of there!
and now more people migrate to kbin :)
Joined kbin today. Been on Lemmy for a few days. I just want to be where the community is. :')
All the alternative I’ve tried in past exoduses have been mostly fine as far as platforms go, just seriously stale and lacking due to lack of users and interactions. One thing I loved about Reddit was there always being enough people that even super niche communities had active users.
Hopefully we get an increase in capacity soon
streisand effect is imminent. reddit is absolutely not immune to it. the admins are idiots for this
