I never say vegan “XYZ” because an absurd amount of people get vegan and vegetarian confused. I just say “plant based” and chances are better that they get it right or ask me for clarification.
i say i eat plant based because vegan sounds like a scifi alien race.
while im at it, fediverse sounds like a fake town for feds.
Vegan also implies ethical motivations, whereas plant based implies health motivations. Some people are more open to a healthy food discussion than an ethics discussion.
