I can’t imagine what audiences in the 60s thought when this episode aired. It’s still really cool to watch today (I prefer seeing the original effects to the remastered version too).

For real. I have a 32" CRT dedicated to watching TOS and the rarely used SNES. Shows from that era are better viewed in the intended format, I think. My copy of TOS is too high quality. It makes it easy to spot foam rocks on the set if I just watch it on my computer.

Years ago someone had a Youtube channel where they were remastering this episode with their own CGI work. I’ve looked for it since then and can only assume they took it down for whatever reason. It was far superior to the CBS version, not only in the parts that CBS did but in some added parts. A key moment that I can’t get out of my head was when the Enterprise turns around to head back to attack - it was a beautiful shot of the ship doing a long 180 through the asteroid debris.

But I’ll take the original any day, still one my top favorites, and that one scene…“don’t you think I know that?”

The original effects for the Doomsday Machine are nicer and hold up better than their rematered counterparts. It looks more metallic and less plasticky.

I think the special effects are mostly part of the remastered version. I don’t think there is a non remastered version available.

Could be wrong though. Star trek the original series looks so good on a old black and white CRT

When I last watched it on Paramount +, there were two versions available, with the “remastered” version being from some time in the 00s. I think.

I wasn’t alive in the 60s so I don’t actually know what the original looked like. I do know that a lot of the original series has been lost to time due to the tapes getting lost.
