I think I’m going to buy it soon as well. Heard it’s a little rough around the edges, but the first games weren’t exactly stable either. From what I’ve seen so far it’s exactly as hoped: a modern stalker game like the old ones. Atmospheric, dark, hard, and janky. I respect the devs so much for building a game like this during such hard times.
So I’ve always heard of but never played the first Stalker. Obviously it has a pretty big reputation. Do I need to play the first? Is there a synopsis of the first that will suffice? This game looks right up my alley. Gritty sci-fi shooter in a similar timeline. Looks gorgeous as well.
This new stalker game re-introduces characters and story for people who don’t know them from before, and from what I’ve heard foes a pretty good job doing it too. So no, you don’t need to play the previous games.
Awesome thank you!
Story is the least important part of Stalker series (there’s 3 previous games).
I’m about to okay for the first time. Compiling shaders zzz… Edit: it’s a lot of fun, good combination of environment, action and story (so far) I’m getting about 110 fps with a 3070ti on high settings at 1440p
Just to add a little insight to this; compiling shaders on your own machine is an absolute win in bandwidth and storage space.
Isn’t the game some 150GiB?
Who on earth worries about bandwidth nowada… Oh, them. Lol 😂
Not everybody has the money for good internet…
That, and there are still many parts of the US that are underserved in internet access. I have a friend who lives ~15 minutes outside of a major city and, until recently, the whole family shared a flaky ~2Mbps connection. They begrudgingly adopted Starlink because that was the only decent option.
Fibre is only a few euros a mon… Oh wait, them again 😂
“them”?
Are you some sort of schizophrenic?
Hm. I got a 4070 super and getting 55-60. But I’m also running it straight out the box on Linux, so there will hopefully be a slew of performance gains to be had then. Glad it’s not the game itself running poorly! It does feel a bit more streamlined (kinda like the morrowind -> oblivion transition), but I’m still really enjoying the game so far 4 hours in.
Hey fellow Linux gamer, does the game compile your shaders from scratch every time it starts, or it’s just me? Started it 3 times so far, 45 minute compilation each time… Absolute PITA.
Edit: forgot to mention I have the GOG version, you may play in Steam with its fancy shader cache updates…?
I am on steam yes. Good shout about getting it on gog though. I do get a fair chunk of shader pre compilation. But not 45 minutes, maybe like 5? And then there is some once the game has launched in a loading screen as well.
According to tests its currently pretty buggy, but its following Stalker 1 regarding that XD
Like Skyrim and Fallout, the genre tends to be buggy.
Personally I’ve found it to be way more stable and performant than any of the prior entries, even after they got patches.
Not hating on the originals but that’s not a high bar to clear. But yeah, so far I have not encountered any major bug after 3+ hours so I’d say they cleared it. DLSS is fucked up though for some reason, (I can see the actual (not upscaled) frame every 4 frame or something) which is weird because it usually works pretty well out of the box in unreal.
Yeah most reviews from today are with the test version and good reviews state that they where patched daily and that a major patch comes out on release day. Its probability running well now.
It runs decently smoothly but I was getting a lot of crashes. Hopefully will be stable by weekend.
I actually wonder what’s up with 4AGames/Metro. Metro Awakening might be nice and all, but it’s not an Exodus sequel. And not by 4AGames.
Ukrainian devs with 3 games so far that play entirely in Russia with Russian characters… They must feel they are in a pickle these days.
