Whenever I see impressive ROM hacks running on original hardware I think about how they would have been received if they were released during the console’s generation. Talking about Sonic being in the original Super Smash Bros or being able to play Super Mario 64 with split screen would normally be pretty close to saying your dad works for Nintendo but if you could back it up with an actual copy of the game which would you choose to make yourself a schoolyard legend?

    I were the schoolyard legend.

I knew basic English at the age of 7 and advanced english at 12. so I was the only kid that could actually translate what they said in various games

I also knew how to duplicate pokemon in 1st and 2nd gen for Gameboy.

That’s all it took. What is now easily obtainable information was a black hole of forbidden knowledge back then.

Ahhh, the lost era of poring through GameFAQs textfiles, where every visual cue had to be described in prose or approximated in ASCII art.

There’s games I did not beat until a playthrough showed up on Youtube. “Oh, there! Why did LinkGoku117 call that stump a kettle?”

Mew being obtainable from the back of a truck in Vermillion city in Red/Blue/Yellow.

You could add in a truck outside of the Team Rocket Hideout in Celadon, and then after you clear Team Rocket out of it, the truck is gone, shows up in Vermillion near the SS Anne, if you snoop around a bit you can find a Team Rocket guy trying to lay low who drops a key to the back of the truck when you defeat him.

Back of the truck has some TMs and an encrypted data disk.

Then, if you use Strength on the truck, it reveals a Bond Villain Lair esque Team Rocket hideout built into caverns that function as a submarine dock.

This lair features Lt. Surge battling through various parts of the cavern system along side you, but only if you have already beaten Giovanni at Silph Co.

There are a few places he pops up, and if you’ve beaten Giovanni at Silph Co., Surge uses his Voltorbs and Electrodes to self-destruct away certain rocks, exposing otherwise secret areas.

One of these secret areas has a boss Team Rocket Lieutenant or Scientist who drops a decryption key when defeated.

Bring the encrypted disk and the decryption program to Bill, who tells you he can decrypt it, but needs a whole lot of power to supercharge an expirimental computer he happens to be working on just for something like this.

To fulfill that, you have to have a Zapdos in your party that knows Thunder.

Put all that together and Bill can decrypt the drive and wow! It’s Mew!

Further, Mewtwo will now only actually appear in Cerulean Cave if you have Mew in your party.

Don’t know if you just improvised that off the top of your dome but I’ll upvote any reference to Mew at the back of a truck in Vermilion City in Red/Blue.

My 9-year-old self would have loved that puzzle you just put together.

        Glad you enjoy it!

And yeah, I just made it up over the course of maybe 45 minutes.

Had to refer to some wikis a few times to get some of the details straight, I haven’t played anything Pokemon in about a decade haha.

There must be PS1 nude mods for Tomb Raider. I’d put it behind a cheat code. If you show it off on your copy, you could insist everyone else is doing it wrong.

To additionally fuck with anyone who walked off with my magic copy of the game, I would also have it apply to the enemy dudes. Which come to think of it sounds like something Core would have done for real if they thought they could get away with it. I think in the second game there is a “nude cheat” that makes Lara explode.
