As a junior reporter I go to a local ranch to do a puff piece on a prize winning pig that just won the state fair best in show blue ribbon. As I go to knock on the door I see the pig, it’s all dolled up with his ribbon on and a top hat, but he’s missing a leg now and he’s bandaged up.
As the family let’s me in I immediately ask what happened to the pig. First they tell me how the pig saved their lives as it made a huge racket when the barn caught on fire last year and woke everyone up. I ask again about the leg and instead I hear the story about how the pig would walk their young daughter to school, once chasing off a lone wolf that surely would have made off with their daughter had it not been for the pig. I ask again about the leg and they tell me instead about how the pig loved being in the house like one of the dogs, getting scratches and pets and was even house trained.
As I write down each of these stories for the puff piece I insist they tell me what happened to the pigs leg, to which they reply–a pig that special you just don’t eat all at once.
I’ve been digging your work as of late. You’ve been trying a lot of new stuff, and there’s a lot of growth.
