Summary

Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the suspect in the New Orleans terrorist attack that killed 14 and injured 35, had long expressed extremist religious views, including condemning music, intoxicants, and other pleasures as evils.

Recordings and social media posts linked him to ISIS ideology, including plans to kill. Jabbar, a U.S.-born Army veteran, used a truck flying an ISIS flag and planted explosives near the attack site.

Authorities suspect he acted alone but are investigating further.

Officials emphasized resilience while condemning the violence and supporting victims.

Am I reading that this guy was broadcasting his intentions in increasingly alarming ways for some time before he ran a bunch of people over, including plans to kill his entire family, and the FBI knew about him at least hours ahead of time … and his actions still couldn’t be prevented?

I think we pay a lot of people way too much money to just take notes and mop up blood.

I guess the question is what did he do prior to this that was arrestable? The FBI is probably following thousands of people who talk a big game online but never take any actions. I don’t think we have enough information to be blaming anyone but the murderer for what happened here right now

Who said he should have been arrested? At the most basic, a knock and “Hey, how you doing?” would be a start. And for all the surveillance that goes on, you’d think that this guy would have raised a flag and had someone paying real close attention to him. “Clearly unhinged guy rents a truck on Turo and heads for NYE in New Orleans” - I’ve been pulled over for less.

The longest recording centers on Jabbar’s interpreting scripture to mean that “poetry, like rapping” could gradually lure people “into the things that God has made forbidden to us: the intoxicants like marijuana, alcohol, sedatives, opioids, stimulants and others”.

“Then there’s the way that music entices us to illicit sex, vulgarity, violence, betrayal, arrogance, burglary, cheating, ingratitude to our spouses or others in general,” he continued. Suggesting music was “Satan’s voice,” he added: “It drives us to waste our wealth, sever the ties to kinship – and even idolatry by calling us to worship … the artist themselves.”

The music is enticing people to violence. This must be stopped. The only thing to be done about this is to try to kill as many random people as possible.

I’m guessing there will be calls to ban a specific religion now, if that helps…

      (It doesn’t help.)

Jabbar’s rhetoric would later escalate dramatically. Joe Biden said the FBI told him and his White House aides that agents found, “mere hours before the attack”, that Jabbar had “posted videos on social media indicating that he was inspired by IS, expressing a desire to kill”.

    Wait whut

Janky grammar. Remember that this is Joe Biden we are talking about. The man’s brain is cooked. Below is what I am fairly certain he was trying to communicate.

Joe Biden said the FBI told him and his White House aides that agents found, that Jabbar had posted videos on social media, mere hours before the attack indicating that he was inspired by IS, expressing a desire to kill.

Smells a bit like they were handling him and panicked when they realized he was gearing up to kill people.

Or, some Facepals reader sent them a video that took hours to get to the FBI who looked up to see the news reports.
