Introducing three of my kids to D&D. One of them asked a few days ago how old he had to be to play, and I said 0. It snowballed from there and I have now planned an introductory campaign for them after brushing the dust of my D&D 3.5 rule books. I’m going to the library in a little bit to print out character sheets.

They’re aged 10, 11, and 13, and I’m pretty sure they’d all get bored if the first session is all spent picking a character and learning the rules of character creations, so I’m flipping it a bit on the head: They’ll jump straight in with class and race unspecified, and introduce things as we go.

The “tutorial” starts with them being tasked with clearing out a kobold lair, after which they will find some gear that will be tailored for each class. Depending on what gear and weapon they choose, I’ll help them pick a race and class.

Then comes more puzzle-oriented task, which will introduce them to the skill system.

Then they’ll Hopefully become lvl 1, which is when I’ll introduce them to features and spells if applicable.

I’m planning a lot of stuff actually.

By far the most important is to build some small decorative stone walls in my cactus garden. The garden is in a slope so I had to make it in three levels, with a plastic separator holding the substrate of the higher two; it works like a charm but it’s ugly, so I’m going to hide the separator with stones and some cement.

I wish that I could graft my pepper plants, but most of them have green fruits so I’d rather not. Harvest has been really nice though, enough for some homemade hot paprika, I’ll probably dry and grind it this Saturday.

Then there’s some bash script that I use to cheat on a silly clicking game. I refactored it recently so it doesn’t stop working once I change the window decorations, it’s working great but I want to automate a few more things. To be frank it’s a lame excuse to learn bash, I don’t even care about the game.

Then I’ll cook a bunch of dishes that my mum is asking me. She had enough of “festivity meals”, and wants simpler stuff. Rice with hot dogs, one-meal “put everything here” salad, stuff like this. Plus a focaccia but that’s for my own sake, I’ve been craving some.

Leaving this afternoon to a stay in a nice hotel, leaving the tweens with relatives. Spending the weekend in the big city with our adult kids and going to the Harry Potter Concert Series dressed up as our favorite house.

My wife and older daughter love Harry Potter. I’m just happy to get the hell out of the house—I work from home and outside of doctor appointments and trips to the store I never leave these walls. Probably get a chance to have a cigar and talk Star Wars with my son-in-law. Some nice meals. Some drinks. And generally feel like my own person for a bit.

I’m sure the concert will be fun, too. Dressing up as movie characters for a musical theater experience? Sounds like millennial Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I have a few things on the docket: fix my rifle, get my home server set up, play some party games with friends, and run a Pathfinder session
