Calfire inmate firefighters volunteer for placement in it. It’s bad enough as is but don’t make it something it isn’t.

That’s what they do in US prisons, use them for unpaid labour, or they get a very small amount. But imagine forcing someone to put out a blazing forest fire when they’ve never done such a thing, and then taking them back to prison. That’s insane. It’s all insane.

Yeah, I mean the forced / coerced prison labour is shit enough as it is, but making that labour actively life-threatening is horrific

If I’m following news properly, these are probably the juveniles who were taken from their holding facility to fight fires. They are not compensated for this work, but are placed in harm’s way.

That doesn’t sound like work at all. That sounds like something where someone is a prisoner and is forced to work for someone. That’s called something, I think.

Not making an argument for it, but technically they’re using the exception to the amendment. Most states, including California, have it in their state amendments, so unless they put in another Federal amendment it’s going to remain this way.

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist

          Thirteenth Amendment

Yeah, and you can use the word. The thirteenth amendment says in no uncertain terms that SLAVERY is legal…if it’s the punishment for a crime.

Very little. Anti work and work reform communities have turned into generalized working/not rich class communities.
