I think you’re giving him too much credit; he doesn’t have a history of thinking things out past what’s in his immediate vicinity (if at all). I think he sees a bunch of undeveloped land and wants it. Then he’d be associated with adding that much more land to the US.
They want Greenland because they know climate change is happening fast and need a safe haven until they’re ready for Mars.
