After Saturday’s 23-14 AFC divisional round loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in which some penalty calls worked against the Texans, Houston defensive end Will Anderson Jr. said, “We knew it was going to be us versus the refs going into this game.”

When I watched it at live speed, it looked like a block using hands. Had to slow it way down to see the helmet contact. If you read through the rule, however, Goff probably isn’t a “defenseless” player at that point, so there’s room to argue the penalty wouldn’t qualify during that play.

The rules analyst could be wrong, but according to them on the broadcast the QB is protected through the whole play after an interception.

QB protection continues so long as he doesn’t further engage in the play. Blocking or attempting a tackle voids that protection.
